What We Say:
In a futuristic Tokyo, the city finds itself in the midst of an ever increasing crime wave, turning the once safe metropolis to a place of violent lawlessness. From this desperation, people turn to hired vigilantes such as Jo and Meg from the “Jacks of All Trades” shop. Run by just the two of them, Jo and Meg will take up just about any odd job such as searching for a lost pet, locating stolen goods, even kidnapped people. Whatever the job is, these two come armed, Jo with her collection of firearms and brilliant shooting skills and Meg with her talent for backing up Jo in combat. During their hired exploits, they make plenty of enemies, but their latest adventure finds them breaking and entering into the apartment of teenage Takeru, a magnet for bullies. Takeru comes home after yet another after school beat-down to find Meg in his room along with Jo in his bed recovering from her latest on-the-job injuries. After falling for Meg’s threat of showing his mother his girlie magazine stash, Takeru begrudgingly agrees to let them stay until his mom returns home from work. His fascination with the girls piques when Jo and Meg suddenly escape from his seventh story window directly in the line of fire from the guys who were chasing them. Jo and Meg may have found themselves an unlikely ally when Takeru decides to assist them in evading their never ending list of enemies.
Jo and Meg make a fun pair, each possessing characteristics of a boyfriend/girlfriend coupling. There is a hint of shojo-ai, since Jo acts like a protective boyfriend, often carrying Meg and shielding her from harm’s way. Jo is a quiet type, strong and androgynous in appearance. Men are often amazed at her fighting and firearm skills and Meg idolizes her, looking up to Jo as her hero, much like she would to a chivalrous boyfriend. Meg on the other hand, acts girlie, is very chatty and silly. She often drapes herself over Jo and even threatens some perpetrators by informing them that Jo will rescue her.
The cover art of Burst Angel, shows a sharp and bright drawing of Jo and Meg. For those not familiar with the anime that precedes the manga, on the cover art Jo appears to be a man since Meg has her hand wrapped lovingly around Jo’s neck. While the characters are drawn consistently well, the background can appear vacant and a little sloppy at times. After each act, there are fun cartoon-ish chibi drawings making fun of some event from the previous chapter. Overall this is a very fun read and a good light shojo-ai pairing.
