A year ago, we passed along news that Johnny Depp was attached and ready to go for the adaptation of the 60's supernatural television series Dark Shadows. The actor, a big fan of the series which racked up 1,225 episodes, was eager to star in the project but no other news has filtered down the wires on who's leading and when production begins. Until now. IESB.net is reporting that Depp's friend and long-time teammate Tim Burton is set to lead the direction of the film with screenwriter John August (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) also on board to pen it.

Johnny Depp's Infinitum-Nihil and GK Films are producing and Depp has had interest in playing Barnabas Collins, the vampire patriarch of the series, but that hasn't been confirmed.

Over 1,225 episodes, "Dark Shadows" was a highly atmospheric, spooky soap that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves, ghosts and zombies.

WTF is up with these two. Can't they get along without each other. Are they secretly in love.
Great f@#$ing choice to have Burton direct this. I think he'll turn out a great product.

Great. I wanted a Dark Shadows movie, but I wanted it to be original. Now it's just going to be a generic Tim Burton movie. This guy hasn't had an original thought in the last 16 years (outside of Big Fish).

It was the first thing we tuned to after coming home from school.(I'm 50 by the way.)
Seems camp by today's standards but back then it was the creepiest thing on TV.
Even the opening scene from, The Secret Storm freaked me out; that- and Amy's bad teeth.
Liked Depp in the Ninth Gate as well. You can find most of the "Dark Shadows" original episodes in: alt.binaries.classic.tv.shows.

Well, if anyone's fitting for a Dark Shadows movie I'd say it'd be Tim Burton. And I'd love to see Johnny Depp play a vampire. And I don't know what you mean by Burton hasn't had an original thought in 16 years. Yeah, his filming style is the same but his movies aren't. I don't know what you mean Necro.

Well, another director that I just thought of could pull this off better than Burton and that's the dude that directed Pan's Labryinth. I want to say his name but I keep on forgeting it. Deltoro or something. The Pan's Labryinth dude. But I guess he'll be busy for awhile.

I work with a woman who is a huge fan of Dark Shadows. She was positively giddy when
Depp was going to star in the movie. She'll spontaneously combust when she hears Tim Burton will direct.

Sweet! I hope they keep it serious, though. Burton has a tendency to throw in that dark humor, which would be a bit out of place here. This needs to be a serious drama. Depp will kill! (pun intended)

AWESOME!!!! Why complain if people like working together, and work well together???
This is the perfect vehicle for these two.

Holy crap, how did I miss hearing about this??? I don't mind Burton and Depp working together. Admittedly, they do it a lot, but they usually make a damn good movie together.

Too bad NBC'c 1991 revival of Dark Shadows with actor Ben Cross as Barnabas only lasted 12 episodes before NBC pulled the plug. Johnny Depp is an interesting choice, although I think Tim Burton and Alex Proyas should write and direct a new installment of The Crow w/ Depp in the lead!

"WTF is up with these two. Can't they get along without each other. "

When you have a winning team, why break it up? Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Why would you NOT want them teamed up?

Betcha Helena Bonham Carter will be in it, too....
