TV Wasteland

Butt Kicking Double Feature

By: Stephen Lackey
Date: Monday, October 22, 2007

A few months ago, when all of the networks were announcing their fall premieres, one of the shows FOX announced but hedged on a start date was The Sarah Conner Chronicles, a spinoff from the popular Terminator film franchise. They finally settled on a Sunday night time slot but now in the “official” announcement, the series has been moved to Monday night as a lead in for 24 when Prison Break takes its hiatus. I have hope for this series ,but I’m approaching it with a good bit of skepticism. I also wonder if they’ll be able to maintain the story threads set up in that franchise. The show runners did manage to wink at the fans by hiring Summer Glau (Firefly) for the series.

The series, also slightly re-titled to Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles, is set between the first and second films with Sarah trying to protect her son, who will be the savior of the world in the future, from robots coming from the future that want to kill him. Sarah is played by Lena Heady, who is a fine actress but somehow she doesn’t seem right for the part. You may recognize her from 300 or The Cave. If you look at the images from the series, she looks way too put together for a woman who is supposedly spending her time jumping from place to place, hooking up with various men that can train her and her son in the use of weapons, fighting, and other abilities they need to defend themselves from the attacking robots. This was the set up for her character in the second film. She looks like a well put together soccer mom. Like I said, I’ll give it a shot but I’ll be keeping my expectations low. The series premieres January 14th.

This week Prison Break is back! Other than that of course I’m recommending Heroes and Supernatural. I’m also watching Reaper, The Unit, Bionic Woman, and Smallville. Wow, Smallville is really bad this season so far. I’m really hoping something happens to make these characters more interesting.

Saturday

STEPHEN KING’S IT (ABCFAM, 8PM EST)

Even though this mini series is dated in look and style due to its age, it’s still one of the better Stephen King TV adaptations. In this film, a group of friends meet in their hometown after years of being apart to do battle against an evil monster that takes children from the town.

HEADLESS HORSEMAN (SCIFI, 9PM EST)

This film tells the story of a small backwoods town where the citizens sacrifice teens to the titular monster. Probably won’t be great but the “backwoods” stereotypes should be amusing.

Sunday

THE BOURNE SUPREMACY (NBC, 8PM PST)

This second installment in the franchise features stronger action and better overall execution than the first. In this film, Bourne is lying low in India and the CIA seems to have lost interest in him. All of that changes when two agents are found dead in Berlin and Bourne’s fingerprint is found at the scene.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles is set after T2, so we really have no idea how Sarah's character should act since she was dead before Terminator 3.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles actually takes place between T2 and T3, not between the first two Terminator films. I'm still highly skeptical about it, especially since the producers of T3 are behind the show and want to have this be part of Terminator canon and not T3 (despite the fact that I'd like to pretend T3 never happened too).

No, it takes place AFTER T2, not between T2 and T3 because T3 is thrown away.

Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles is an amazing show, just by the pilot, it's very well done. And Sarah in the show is still a freak.

Well, Terminator 3 isn't "thrown away" until a movie comes out that contradicts it. And since "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins" is being billed as the first in a trilogy of movies set after Terminator 3, I don't think they're ignoring the third movie.

Stephen - thanks for adding Pushing Daisies to the Wasteland!

I agree with some of the criticisms Entertainment Weekly had about Heroes in its latest issue. I thought at the end of the first season, a sort of a Justice League was going to be formed. However, they are all off doing their own things again. I think that is wrong. The second season of the show should having the characters going forward rather than backward. Also, the new characters have yet to interest me except for the girl who can do things she watches on television. Now that would be a cool power to have. Still, I'm losing patience with the show. The lives of these people have changed forever. They can't simply go back to what they were before. i know that is supposed to be the point but it will take the show a few more episodes for everyone to figure it out.

Because of the time-travel element in the story arc, it would be possible for "Sarah Conner Chronicals" to take place in its own self-contained, possibly alternate, timeline.

If that makes sense...

I did not misread the press release about The Sarah Conner Chronicles unless everyone did. Here's a quote:

"Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is a spin-off of the popular Terminator movies, and is set between the events in the original Terminator and its megamillions sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day."

So no it does not happen between 2 and 3, it's in fact between 1 and 2 as I mention in the article....

Hehe, slackey, you're actually wrong. It does take place after T2. Did you see the pilot already? They run into the Dyson family again after the Death of Miles. Sarah is branded as his murderer and is on the run.

Well at least it was bad information from a FOX press release!
