Supernatural: Trial and Error Review

The Prophet makes a big discovery

The Winchester brothers appear to be as happy as they have been in many years.  They have turned the Men of Letters storehouse into their new living abode giving their first real home since they began hunting.  Much to Sam’s amusement, Dean can barely contain his excitement over having his own room.  He even takes advantage of the kitchen to cook burgers for he and Sam.

Their dinner is interrupted when they get a call from Kevin Tran, the Prophet.  Kevin, after working almost sleeplessly for weeks, has finally cracked the instructions on the tablet that explains how to close the gates of Hell permanently.  But of course it’s never simple and the spell requires three trials to be completed.  The first requires the brothers having to kill a hellhound and bathe in its blood.  However in order to find a hellhound, they have to find someone who has struck a bargain with a demon.

They journey to Idaho where the Cassity family discovered oil ten years earlier.  The brothers have to figure out which member of the “Dallas” like clan made the deal with the demon so they can keep them under surveillance.  Despite the candidates seemingly being anyone of the overbearing family members, it turns out that it was an unlikely person who is being stalked by the hellhound.

An interesting dynamic between the brothers this week as they debated which one of them would perform the trials.  As Sam pointed out, Dean wants to do the trials because he plans on dying, while Sam wants to be the one to perform the trials because he sees a light at the end of the tunnel in their battle against evil.  Even Dean could not fault Sam’s reasoning.  Could the brothers finally be on the same page?

The big question is will they actually close the gates of hell?  Certainly there’s still more than enough threats to keep them busy with monsters, demigods, spirits, and other creatures, not to mention the Nazi Necromancers.  This week’s plot wasn’t the most enthralling but it was a means to an end.  The show had not made much progress on the subject of Kevin and the tablet in recent weeks to it was great to get back this storyline.

But if there’s one thing I want to see it is to start seeing them take advantage of the Men of Letters storehouse of lore.  Thus far we’ve seen Sam’s nose buried in assorted books but considering that battle they went through to get the key I’m assuming there must be something more interesting in there than just some dusty books.

I love the show, but I honestly think an A- is a little generous on this episode.  It was good, don't get me wrong, but Dean's virtual suicidal attitude was a little out of left field for me.  It's one thing to prepare for the worst, but Dean almost seems like he's not only expecting the worst, but hoping for it.  Honestly, I don't get it.

On a side note, seeing Sam in those hellhound glasses only went to strengthen my belief that Jared Padalecki would make a decent Superman.

I took the Clark Kent remark to Dean as an inside joke since he was up for the part of Clark on Smallville but lost out to Tom Welling.

I never knew that...well, at least he got the better show in the long run.

I liked that they referred to the old man as "J.R."  The actor playing the old man did bear a resemblance to Jim Davis who played Jock Ewing (i.e. JR's father) on the old Dallas TV series.  I don't know if it was intentional by the producers that he bear a resemblance to Jim Davis, but it was a good in joke reference.

I also couldn't believe they played "I Touch Myself" by the Divinyls.  Still can't believe that song is over twnety years old.  I remember hearing that song on the school bus when I was in high school and a girl said "This is the stupidest song I have ever heard in my life.  What the frick does I touch myself supposed to mean?  I have a little sister and she asks me what it means.  How am I supposed it to explain it to her."  Even after more than twenty years,  I laugh evey time I hear that song.

The introduction of the Nazi necromancers makes me think that they are going to close the gates, because, if you can't have actual demons from Hell, Nazi necromancers sound like a reasonable substitute.

Can I just mention that I find "Osric Chau" to be one of the greatest names I have ever heard?

against regular shows, definitely an A. Against the better episodes of Supernatural, barely a B. The final target of the hellhound was obvious and it was the 100th time we get the typical brother speeches about Dean's morbid mortality and Sam's possible post hunter life. Did enjoy Sam gutting the hellhound. Ellie was insanely hot. Love theirtradition of casting hot brunettes.

Now that rhe show has been renewed for a 9th season, will at the end of the current season the brothers shut the gates or we will be left with a cliffhanger and the story will continue and wrap on its 9th season ??
