Well, this may just be an actor having fun with the media, but 'The Dark Knight' actor Michael Caine has thrown some gasoline on the rumor fire, naming not only the villains for the next Batman movie, but the actors who will play them as well.
Speaking from the Toronto Film Festival Caine told MTV that he knows the premise of the next Batman movie.
"It's Johnny Depp as The Riddler. And The Penguin is Philip Seymour Hoffman. I read it in the paper," the actor said.
Even though he admits its just a rumor he read in the paper, Caine later changed his story, stating that he'd also heard the news direct from the suits at Warner Bros.
"I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make another one?' They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I'll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.' I said, ‘S–t, they've done it again!'"
However, Caine also admitted that he had not discussed these rumors with director Christopher Nolan.
By all recent accounts, Nolan has not yet begun work on the new Batman movie and hasn't decided on the villains for the piece yet.
Johnny Depp himself recently denied his half of the rumor, saying he's unaware of the Riddler role being offered to him.
And David Goyer told Comics2Film back in July that fans shouldn't necessarily expect the obvious villain choices (of which Riddler and Penguin certainly number). "Batman has been published for seventy years," said Goyer. "There are dozens if not hundreds of characters. Everyone says it's gotta be Penguin or Catwoman. I completely disagree."
So, while Caine may have some insights about what the Warner suits are thinking, the question of Batman sequel villains should be considered to still be open.
