A week after New Line grabbed Dwayne Johnson to lead the action in Journey 2: Mysterious Island---the follow-up to their 2008 remake Journey to the Center of the Earth---Heat Vision reports the studio and director Brad Peyton have likewise added Michael Caine to the cast. Josh Hutcherson is the only returning star confirmed from the original, with Johnson taking on the leadership role left void after Brendan Fraser had to bow out due to scheduling issues. The movie will shoot in Hawaii and then move to North Carolina.
Plot Concept: The script, loosely based on Jules Verne's "The Mysterious Island," sees Hutcherson reprising his role from the first movie and partnering with Johnson, playing his mom's boyfriend, on a trip to a mythical island to find his missing grandfather. Caine is the grandfather, but the part is no cameo. The role will see the actor in action mode, engaging in several chase sequences, including one involving giant bees.
Journey 2: Mysterious Island will hit 3D/2D theaters September 23, 2011.
