James Cameron is joining with Walden Media to produce a large-format 45 minute documentary called GHOSTS OF THE ABYSS focusing on exploring the sunken wrecks of the Titanic and the German battleship, the Bismark. The project, which Cameron will direct, is the result of equipment research work that the helmer has been doing at the sites of ships.
The documentary will be shot on 3-D digital video with a planned release on video and DVD.
The project, which will be based on a Russian research vessel currently docked at Newfoundland, will set sail on Monday.
Cameron issued a statement on the project, saying, "We have been preparing for this expedition for three years, putting together the technology to go beyond what's been done before. Now that we're going, everyone's pretty excited. We have a very good team, many of whom were with me on the (TITANIC) expedition."
Meanwhile, Variety reports that the previously announced Cousteau project that covered the same ground in development for the ABC TV network has been put on hold indefinitely.
