Cameron Plans AVATAR Trilogy?

James Cameron on Avatar's success and future.

By Jarrod Sarafin     February 08, 2010

James Cameron's Avatar may have finally relinquished its domination of the box office this weekend, with Screen Gems' Dear John taking full advantage of the young female audience not caring about any big "Super" game, but there's still a future ahead for the inhabitants of Pandora. Both Cameron and 20th Century Fox have not kept secret their desire for an Avatar sequel.

And it seems that director Cameron may have a trilogy or more in mind for the sci-fi franchise. Before accepting the Lucky Brand Modern Master Award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, here's what the director told Heather Newgen at ComingSoon while walking down the red carpet.

CS: Do you know where the story is going for the next film?

Cameron: Yeah, I definitely have a story arc in mind for the second film and even on a very vague base for a third film. That doesn't mean we'll do a third film - it doesn't mean we'll stop at a third film. We'll just have to see where it goes.

Translation: We're making a sequel because this one made a shitton of money without having a good plot or even halfway competent dialog. If the second one makes the same kind of money (and it will, since people ate up the vomit of the first one and asked for thirds), we'll keep making them until people get sick of it and finally come to their senses.

I want 20 sequels.

wolfmanX 2/8/2010 4:36:32 AM

lmao @ Wiseguy. I want sequels also. :-)

why does this not surprise me. hollywood always does this they take a good franchise and beat it down until its dead. just like marvel does with its comic book titles

I think Cameron is competant enough to make decent sequels, what worries me is if the franchise gets handed over to some other hacks. If Cameron makes them in Imax 3-D, I could care less about the story, as long as the spectacle is as cool as the 1st.

Cameron said before it made all the money it did he had a sequel in mind...so kind of hard to bash him for saying that.

My guess would be that he does his trilogy and anything after that he'll just produce and let someone else direct.  I'm sure he wants to do other things.

Avatar=Star Wars the next generation. Seriously what I mean is that I think James will turn this into his cash cow as lucas did for star wars.

I don't know if I agree with vagabondster about this being the next starwars, did anyone see the happy meal toys from mcdonald's, creepy.

Jensen Ackles for Captain America!!!

@vagabondster - you are correct sir.  I said that as I walked out of the movie, "This is what it must've been like walking out of Star Wars 33 years ago."  The comparisions to Star Wars are numerous and mostly accurate.

@daforce1 - At this point you're yelling at fish for swimming.  Your complaints need to be aimed at Hollywood, not just with Cameron.  This is how the business works.  Two words: Saw 7.
