In an interview with Ain't It Cool News, James Cameron confirmed a few members of the cast in his upcoming sci fi epic, Avatar.

According to AICN, the new cast members will include: Wes Studi, Sigourney Weaver,  Peter Mensah, Joel David Moore, C.C.H. Pounder and Laz Alonso.  Also attached are Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana.

The site also mentioned that Cameron was just returning from Kauai where he had been shooting 3 days of live action shots.

The film is set in the future where Jake, a paraplegic war veteran, is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na'vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture.

The film, which will make extensive use of cutting-edge motion-capture technology, is targeting a 2008 release.

KJ's Take:  Looks like he is going relatively no name with the cast.  I don't know about this film, but I am beyond interested.

I like Cameron and its about time he comes out with a flick. My only problem is that there is going to be and has been so much hype around this film. It has taken him a long time to get it together and he`s barely started. I just hope that its so good I leave the theater with my eyes bleeding. Anything less and it will just be kind of a let down.

Eyes bleeding? Ponyboy - you've seen that Abandoned add to many times. I would however settle for soiled pants. I agree though after skipping on the last Terminator movie, and not really having done anything for quite a while JC better be doing something HUGE with this movie. So far I'm not going to be waiting in line to see this one.

I hope this is amazing, but after all this time, I can't help but feel this is going to be a major letdown.

Eyes bleeding? Soiled pants? Both you guys make valid points in your comments, but I don't think either are likely to make a career writing promotional lines for movie posters.

"This movie was so good my eyes bled and I shit myslef!"
;-)
Back on topic; I have high hopes for the movie, but I worry about directors like Cameron, who have made careers creating fantastic movies of spectacle. One thing Cameron was great at was showing us things we never saw before. Now, in the pixal age of movies, we've seen it all. And if you haven't seen it before, you know its just a computer image. "Cutting-edge motion-capture technology" just doesn't excite me.

Don't get me wrong, I love James Cameron's movies, and if anybody can make a flick with spectacle and effective plots and characters, its him. I just worry that the time for directors like Cameron might be past. Not saying it is. I'm just worried.

I do believe Cameron can show us something new. What I'm unsure about is whether or not it will be any good. Like ponyboy said, there's been so much hype around this movie and it's been so long since he's done a feature film, I don't know how anything can live up to the speculation. I'm left remembering the Phantom Menance.

I don't think Cameron would do a new scifi movie if he couldn't bring something new to the table. That's what excites and drives him these days. Will the project live up to the hype? I really doubt it, but I still think he'll deliver a great genre film. I don't think any film could live up to the hype. I think post #6 made a good point in mentioning The Phantom Menace; I didn't care much for Lucas' prequels, but no movie could have lived up to the high expectations everyone had. The same thing holds true for Superman Returns; just couldn't match the hype. I think Avatar will ultimately fall into that category, because the hype storm is just starting to brew and the film's a long way away from hitting the screen.

I thought of Phantom Menace when thinking of Avatar as well, but I don't think Cameron will let us down. Cameron has always put characters in the forefront of every one of his films and I have complete faith in his ability to deliver yet again. My only concern is whether or not this movie will be a hard sell. The (very) brief plot points known don't seem to hint at much action in the film. If this film is as cerebral as a movie like Contact, for instance, most American moviegoers may not get into it. If there is a sizable amount of action and suspense then it may be more of a commerical success. Just out of curiosity,is there any word on what the budget of this film is?

Billions -- enough to make your eyes bleed!

We may disagree with the definition of "relatively no name" here. I think Cameron and Weaver, together again, will be a major feature of the promotional blitz for this film.
