Cameron Talks Sci-Fi AVATAR Technology

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Tuesday, May 20, 2008

It's been a decade since director James Cameron stepped behind the camera and went to work on a new epic film and even longer since he entered the world of "sci-fi/fantasy adventure epic" (The Abyss, Aliens, Terminator). Well, that wait is nearly over with his upcoming Avatar 3-D, which is scheduled to hit theaters December 19, 2009.

Cameron had a bit to say about the upcoming sci-fi adventure to
Search Engine Watch.

"'Avatar' will make people truly experience something," said Cameron. "One more layer of the suspension of disbelief will be removed. All the syn-thespians are photo-realistic. Now that we've achieved it, we discovered CG characters in 3D look more real than in 2D. Your brain is cued it's a real thing not a picture and discounting part of [the] image that makes it look fake."

"'Avatar' is the single most complex piece of filmmaking ever made," said Cameron. "We have 1,600 shots for a 2.5 hour movie. It's not with a single CGI character, like King Kong or Gollum. We have hundreds of photo-realistic CG characters. We were Microsoft's sandbox for filmmaking beyond the cutting edge."

"It's not with a single CGI character . . . We have hundreds of photo-realistic CG characters."

Isn't that a little contradictory.

Oh well still can't wait for this.

Anything Cameron does I'm down for. He may not be as prolific as some other directors but the quality of his output is unquestionable. And with this new technology he's using and the theme matter of the film I'm really looking forward to it.

What's going on with Battle Angel? I know he was supposed to release that next summer. I don't know how he's managing if he is keeping to that schedule, two big films in one calendar year. Director's have a hard time with just one and then take into account all the cgi work I'm wondering if he's going to be able to pull it off.

The guy is a movie GOD!!!. The effects he created for The Abyss, Both Terminators, and especially Titanic, say no more...
Hopefully he'll be up for doing a Spiderman movie when he's finished with Avatar.

Cameron owns all!! Someone let this man direct Spider-Man 4 & 5!!!

Whatdoyouknow, Bulls just won the draft.

hanso, think D'antoni is regretting his decision? Bulls should be greatly improved next year.

I doubt Cameron would go for Spidey. He doesn't strike me as wanting to follow on someone else's footsteps. I know he did Aliens but at that time he was still making his mark.

If Cameron were to make a Spider-Man movie, he'd probably want to do a complete reboot of the franchise as opposed to making a direct sequel to a previous mythology. Aliens was obviously early in his career, but his intention from the get go was to make a completely different film in tone, content, and scale than Alien. Spider-Man 4 and/or 5 would be in the same vein and tone as the previous Spider-Man films, and Cameron would never go for that.

While Cameron's resume may not be as extensive as the likes of Spielberg, Ridley Scott, or Zemeckis, I think quality more than makes up for quantity. He doesn't just pick a project for the sake of making a movie unlike most directors in Hollywood. He's a perfectionist and I would liken him to Kubrick since Kubrick only made a handful of films in his career.

Call me nutsy, but I am loving the fact that the plot details are sketchy at best about Avatar and I can't wait to be mesmerized come Christmas 2009. I'm hoping we get a teaser trailer by year's end.

D'Antoni is banging his head against the wall right about now. You know the Bulls are going for Beasley so they can finally get some production in the post. I feel like I'm on an ESPN board :) Heat should be good next year also with Rose at the point.

Back to this though, Cameron wanted to do the first Spider-Man, and I believe he had a story with SandMan and Elektro as the villains. Maybe he can warm up to the idea and still work Elektro. If the man wants to reboot let him reboot but just get this man Spider-Man. Another guy who wanted to do Spider-Man but didn't want to do an origin movie was David Fincher. Imagine if Cameron can do for Spider-Man what he did for Alien.

I'll see this because of Cameron but lets just hope this doesn't turn into his pet project for his "other" technology like Episode 1 was for Lucas...when those guys get older they forget what made their movies so good in the first place.

Gauleyboy I saw from another thread that you haven't had the pleasure of knowing who Kimbo Slice is. He's only the meanest motha you eva seen!!!!! Youtube that dude out if you wanna see some ass kickin. I'm just messin around when I mention him, it amuses me for some weird strange reason, Wiseguy believes I have a mancrush, I think Joeybaloney agrees with him but I haven't decided, all i can say is this:

Looking forward to seeing this if for no other reason so we stop hearing about it. Cameron's been talking about this movie, and trae publications and websites have been reporting on it, for ten years. I just have to wonder if it will match the inevitable hype that's going to precede the movie hitting theaters.
