Director James Cameron has updated us via the geeks at AICN on the status of Avatar. In the update, he explains the process of having to wait for actors to finish up their roles in other non-related projects. The upcoming 3D sci-fi action-adventure will star Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi, Stephen Lang and Matt Gerald.

We've wrapped principal, and most of the live action portion of the movie is already cut. It's starting to look and sound like a movie. I'm ecstatic with the performances and the look. The cast chemistry worked out perfectly.

I'm in New Zealand right now, working on effects, while Steve Quale shoots some second unit. We've worked together a lot (he did the engine room scenes on "Titanic", plus co-directed "Aliens of the Deep" with me) and he's the only guy I trust to shoot stuff for me, especially in 3D. We still have a little performance capture work to do with Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana in March, when we get her back from Star Trek (she's Uhura -- but of course you already knew that.) And we have a couple of days with Stephen Lang in April or May, to shoot his character's last scene, which is so technically difficult it will take us until then to figure out how to do it.

Plot Summary: "Avatar" tells the story of an ex-Marine, thrust unwillingly into an effort to settle and exploit an exotic planet rich in bio-diversity, who eventually crosses over to lead the indigenous race in a battle for survival.

Avatar will hit theaters December 18, 2009.

Know why this will be great, because we haven't already seen this plot numerous times before! [cough] Last Samurai [cough] Why don't you go waste another twenty years filming the wreckage of the Titanic and leave us alone you hack! BTW Titanic was the biggest pile of $#*! in movie history!

HACK?!?! I have noticed there are alot of irrational and judegemental people that comment on this site. 1st off i agree that he spent WAYYY too much time filming the titanic. Hes practically married to that thing. But there is in NO WAY James Cameron is a hack. This man has given us some of the BEST (if not THE best) SCI-FI titles in history: Terminator, ALIENS, Abyss, Terminator 2. This guy has broken alot of ground for other film makers. In no way is this guy a hack. Show some respect if you are a TRUE sci-fi fan. 2nd you havent seen anythign on this movie besides very little official reports and rumors. Sure the plot seems dated, but what plot isnt these days. Ideas get recycled and reworked into somethign different all the time. People on here need to wait before passing judgement so quickly. It may turn out to be CRAP or it may turn on to be GREAT. At least wait until the 1st full trailer comes out.

There are very few original ideas in movies period (whether you realize it or not)! There are just different interpretations based on the writer mixed with the unique creative vision of the director. Stories like these are timeless. They will continue to be retold because they are a moral based premise. And morality is married to tragedy, a perfect movie formula!

The GEEKS over at ACN? Someone getting testy?,,,,,,As for the Cameron bashing, look at the handle of the poster...he is probally notafan of himself either. I think this movie is gonna rock. Cameron is the balls and taint of film-making. Granted, he has been out of the game for a bit, so hopefully he is not off his game, but is this is as good as Titanic (yes I loved the movie), then I am sold.

This will be cool if nothing else.

I was really excited for this until I found out Cameron was the Taint of film-making. Thanks for that Whiskey. Titanic did not, a hack, make. Yes, Cameron got a little masturbatory after that flick, but as Darkknight pointed out, look at that freakin’ resume! Terminator? Aliens? Come on fellas. Cameron gets the benefit of the doubt from me even if Avatar turns out worse than Blues Brothers 2000.

I have complete confidence in Cameron's work. I can not think of ONE movie he has done that I did not enjoy. The story sounds intriguing and with everyone bitching about how hollywood does not come up with anymore good ideas, this man is a perfect example. I just did not realize it would not be coming out for another damn year and a half!!!

I'm very interested in what JamCam has in store for us as some of it sounds very ambitious. Let's hope he delivers. Who keeps taking my "Do Not Feed the Troll" sign down. ;-)

Joey,,,taint is a good thing,,,,lol,,,I actually lifted that form the Dane Cook movie Employee of the Month, which is stupid but funny. He called a guy the balls and taint in a complaiment, and it cracked me up.
