While it's been confirmed that director James Cameron is planning a feature film trilogy on Avatar, it seems he also plans to write a prequel novel based on his characters. Producer Jon Landau has revealed to MTV that Cameron is fleshing out a prequel novel that will lead up to the events that transpired in the original blockbuster film and it could be hitting book shelves late this year.

"It would be something that would lead up to telling the story of the movie, but it would go into much more depth about all the stories that we didn't have time to deal with — like the schoolhouse and Sigourney [Weaver's character] teaching at the schoolhouse; Jake on Earth and his backstory and how he came here; [the death of] Tommy, Jake's brother; and Colonel Quaritch, how he ended up there and all that," Landau explained.

Landau added that other mediums could also be used to tell the stories that are set before the movie opens and after. "There might be opportunities in publishing to tell some of the backstory, tell some of the Earth war stories, what went on in Jake's life before the movie. And we'd have that lead up to the sequel that might take place on Pandora several years after our movie closed."

Writing a novel can be another new feather in Cameron's cap. Wait, didn't he (googling),no he didn't write the novel for The Abyss. So, it will indeed be a new feather.

Doing other novels and stories dealing with the whole universe Avatar takes place in could be like the Star Wars franchise with all its novels, comics and cartoons. Though it doesn't seem as diverse as Lucas' empire.

Cool.  I always wondered what happened to Sokka before he got that scar on his face.

This is just another idea he conjured up on the toilet last night to make even more money resulting from the billions of dollars this movie is making. And it's ingenius!! haha.

One small thought about  Avatar tho.  I thought it was definitely missing some "bad ass" Navi characters he could have developed besides that douche-bag african-tribal-alpha-Navi that ends up dying. Maybe something similar to that hunting party chasing after the main character at the end of Apocalypto. Hopefully there will be something like that in the sequels and book.

Cool. Now let's license out to Marvel for some comic book stories

Nah - not Marvel or DC.

And after the comics he can get 7 great anime companies to make 7 different animated stories in the Avatar universe.

I think ddiaz has the right if it here. Animatrix, Gotham Knight, Halo: Legends, this would be a perfect format for telling these prequel stories. I love the anthology collections like this, and would be more than ready to shell out the cash for it.

A 3D comic would be cool idea whoever develps it.

Wiseguy 2/18/2010 9:48:04 AM

Why  not Marvel or DC. Look at what Marvel has done with Stephen King's works so far and the Halo comic books too.

MrJawbreakingEquilibrium 2/18/2010 3:52:27 PM

Well - true...the Dark Tower series is good.

Speaking of Animatrix, Gotham Knights, and Halo.  Animatrix was mostly good but only a couple of Gotham Knights were good and Halo I have no interest in but I heard it was as bad as Gotham Knight.
