Cancer Man versus Lex Luthor?

By Dave Richards     November 04, 2002

Viewersof Smallville know the town is not an idyllic, rural community. It's home to monsters, mutants, and two future rivals who will become thegreatest hero and villain the world has ever known. On November 12th theTown gets weirder, when we meet t the Mayor of Smallville, the mysteriousman who made life miserable for Agents Mulder and Scully, Cancer Man?

William B Davis who playedblack lunged villain on the X-Files will be portraying Smallville'scorrupt Mayor Tate, in the episode "Ryan". Davis spoke to Zap2it.comabout the role.

Davis was unsure how he endedup being offered the role. He lets producers and agents handle negotiations. He thought it sounded like a fun. Plus it made him quite popular to. Davissaid, "I tell my stepdaughter that I'm going to be on Smallville, and she says, 'What? Holy smokes.' Nothing else I've done has made anyimpression on her since The X-Files, but Smallville reallygot her turned on. I guess it's a really popular show among the young."

What will Mayor Tate's rolebe in the episode? The veteran TV villain will butt heads with developingvillain Lex Luthor. Davis said, "Lex isn't playing the game. He's not livingin the community the way everybody else does. If you want a pro-businessgovernment, then you have to contribute to the party. He's not making politicalcontributions to my campaign. The nerve. He'll get what he deserves. He'llget some left-wing, anti-business government. Then he'll be in trouble. He'll be sorry."

Davis enjoyed filming theepisode and praised Michael Rosenbaum's portrayal of Lex Luthor. He said,"It was great. Working with him was terrific. I enjoyed the first scenemuch better than the second scene, because in the first scene, I win, andin the second scene, he wins."

Davis enjoyed working withRosenbaum so much that he hopes to return to the role of Mayor Tate soon, "It would be sweet if something more develops, because there's certainlythe grounds for a potential relationship there." The thought of thetwo charismatic actors engaging in a war of wits would be a wonderful thingfor fans of great television.
