"Capcom Puzzle World"

Capcom has had an illustrious history when it comes to videogames. They have established many different franchises, from Breath of Fire to Megaman. From Street Fighter to Devil May Cry. There is also the Resident Evil and Ghosts and Ghouls franchise that easily keeps them on top of the world. One thing that they have not been well known for though is their puzzle games, and sure there have been a spattering here and there but overall they are few and far between. So as of late Capcom has been fairly heavy on re-releasing some of their older games in compilations, which allows for the world to re-experience their work while keeping operating costs low. But when there are only five games in total, with only two of them being remotely puzzle related, how could they call this a puzzle world?

This compilation only has five games in total. The first two that are remotely puzzle related are Puzzle Fighter, which a lot will remember is under their Street Fighter franchise. It is incredibly addicting, much like Tetris is, where you will need to line up similar coloured blocks to have them disappear. Sometimes you will need to line up three in a row to get rid of them, and another game might have you connect with a group of one colour with a catalyst to destroy them. It is a mix between Tetris and Columns, where pieces fall from the sky and you must line them up on the ground. Those whom played it before will find out it has stood up quite well over time, and this adaptation preserves it perfectly. The best part is that you can stream the game onto someone else’s PSP so that they can play with you.

The second puzzle game is less of a puzzle game and more of a Break Out styled game, un-creatively named Block Block. Here you must bounce balls off of a paddle and destroy panels above. You can garner power-ups that increase how many balls are on the field, or how big your paddle is. An interesting part of the game is that with each successive hit your paddle gets just a little bit smaller, and this makes the game much more challenging. You can make it through a level though by either destroying all the blocks on the field, or reaching a disappearing / reappearing exit (which will also destroy the rest of the blocks on the field). It is very simple game but it can be frustrating at times if you chase after all of the power-ups.

Finally there are three games of the Buster Brothers series with Buster Bros, Super Buster Bros, and Buster Buddies. Each of them have their own little quirks, and I will readily admit that the character from Buster Bros game looks a little like Gohan from Dragon Ball Z. The idea behind the game is to pop bubbles using a grappling hook, which flies up to the top of the screen. Some power-ups change the game so that you can fire two hooks, a hook that sticks to the top of the ceiling, a clock that freezes time, or gun that lets you fire many shots into the air. With each bubble that you hit, it splits up and reduces in size. Your job it to continue splitting them until all of the bubbles are gone. I remember the game fondly from the past, and it is certainly best played with a friend, though it can get fairly boring after a while.

In the end, this really is a shabby compilation let alone one that could be labelled puzzle based. It is not like they are bad games at all, but the main one that has lasting power is Puzzle Fighter. I would have preferred to see these games bundled in with a different compilation, even if it would cause Capcom to remove one out of the three Street Fighter games from it. I expect a bit more for my $29.99 than a game released over a decade ago, and while it is a fun game I will need to adjust my score appropriately. The main thing bogging the score down is the amount of games available for the price it is being sold at. Wrapping up Captain Gordon gives Capcom Puzzle World a C.
