Did you know that NBC reduced the number of episodes of The Cape from 13 to 10? It’s episodes like this you can understand why. It’s episodes like this that make it so hard for people to like this show. Chess (James Frain) hires a duo of assassins named Goggles (guest star Pruitt Taylor Vince, Deadwood) and the shifty-eyed Hicks (guest star Chad Lindberg, The Fast and the Furious) to kill the hero (David Lyons). Goggles is the brains and Hicks is the muscle.
The special effects were cheap. The background music was just the wrong fit, especially if the creators want to get this show away from the cheese factor. The dialogue was stilted, clichéd, and just plain cringe-worthy – “I see who wears the cape in this relationship” and “I believe in the separation of church and crime.” David Titley is no Joss Whedon, nor David Mamet. The fact that Googles and Hicks referred to the hero throughout as “Mr. Cape,” emphasizing the “mister” part, really wore thin. Mercifully, the subplot with the two boys wasn’t that long, preventing it from becoming totally annoying.
Again, Lyons, Summer Glau, and the rest of the cast are trying, but even the best actors can’t salvage lousy writing.
