Caprica Finishes On DVD First

No Caprica Blu-ray from Universal (yet?)

Caprica has had quite the problematic airing and release schedule and it's no surprise to find it finishing out where it began. SyFy introduced fans to Caprica with the direct to video (and more explicit) movie which aired as the first/pilot episode for the broadcast run as well. After showing the first half of the season at the start of 2010, with plans for it to come back at the start of 2011, they then shifted it to an October airing. The lull between the two halves of the season was pretty much the final nail in the coffin for a show many felt was too soap opera-ish and not as intense as Battlestar Galactica. So when it was canceled with just five episodes left to go, few were really surprised. SyFy announced the final five would air sometime in the first quarter of 2011, close to when the show was originally set to return.

Yet now news has come down that the Caprica 1.5 DVD set will be out on December 21st, meaning that you can see the final episodes then. Unless, of course, you've been watching it in high definition and don't want to watch it in lower quality DVD. Universal has been very awkward in releasing their shows in the 1.0/.5 sets for Battlestar Galactica, instead giving us a massive full series box set before and now releasing the .5 sets and specials, so it's no surprise that a Caprica Blu-ray won't happen for awhile, though hopefully not never for the fans who have supported the show.

With a list price of $49.95, the Caprica 1.5 set will have some extras such as a Season 1.0 recap; seven video blogs; podcasts with director David Eick and season stars Eric Stoltz, Magda Apanowicz, Esai Morales, and Sasha Roiz; and feature episode comment

This show had plenty of potential, but it spent too much time on yawn inducing subjects.  The absurdly long gaps between episode blocks were beyond stupid for a show like this.  Long gaps don't matter so much when you've got a show where the stories stand alone.  If you've got a space opera, extended interruptions to the ongoing storyline are a sure way to piss off your audience.

I really liked this show a lot - it was building up a really great foundation for its 2nd season and hitting some really interesting issues our society might face in the future.

I just hate Syfy now ... the only show I still watch on there is Stargate:Universe and that's mostly just out of lack of better alternatives.

BTW - there was an interesting study showing that people with advanced degrees (MS or PHD) overwhelmingly liked Caprica, those with BAs were mixed, and those without college degrees mostly disliked it.  So I guess too much "think, think" and not enough "bang, bang" .... sigh

I *hate* this .5 nonsense, both on TV and with home video release.  Just give us a whole season at once.  Especially for the DVD and Blu-Ray releases.

Glad to be in Canada we are getting the episodes.  I am disappointed they are ending makes me wonder if the powers that be were not pushing another BG series if Caprica would of given more of a chance.

kalel, there is anotehr BG series taking place during the 1st cylon war announced before the gave Caprica the boot.  Actually it will just be a pilot but hopefully it will be everything Caprica could have been.

Hobbs,

I know about the other show but I am sure since as I understand its done by the peple the same people who did Caprica and BG they approached whomever with the idea and since Caprica was on already on they opted to say you can either have Caprica or the new show but not both.  Now some people say they do not like Caprica cause it does not have the same kind of grit and stories as BG they figure the new series will give the powers that be a series they think everyone wants.
