Caprica: Pilot Review

What Are Little Girls Made Of?

If Caprica aims to make a total break from its predecessor--the indisputably brilliant Battlestar Galactica--then it only partially succeeds. It holds none of the gritty shaky-cam action of the first series and lacks the harrowing do-or-die fatalism which gave BSG its unique sense of identity. But when it comes to grappling with challenging issues, meditating on complex themes and generally elevating the sci-fi genre in general, it's definitely cut from the same cloth.

The self-regard of the series pilot may be off-putting to those expecting something a little more gung-ho. BSG's po-faced solemnity is in full effect, but not the white-knuckle excitement which helped fuel its unique adrenaline kick. Instead, Caprica invites us to contemplate the quiet monstrosity of modern culture, as well as the beginnings of the conflict of faith which came to a conclusion at the end of Battlestar. At its heart lies a single tragedy which arrives like snowflakes before an avalanche. On the planet Caprica--vibrant heart of the Twelve Colonies some 60 years before the Cylons wiped it off the map--a monotheistic terrorist group detonates a bomb on a commuter train. The explosion claims the lives of two young girls: Zoe Graystone (Alessandra Torresani), daughter of brilliant computer mogul Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz); and Tamara Adama (Genevieve Buechner), daughter of corrupt gangland lawyer Joseph Adama (Esai Morales).

The tragedy initially brings both men closer together, forging an unlikely friendship which soon spins into darker territory. Graystone's company is developing some sort of A.I. project for the Caprican government, which Adams' fellows can assist with in unforeseen ways. More disturbing is the appearance of a computer-generated clone of Zoe, created by the original girl before her death and now trapped in a sort of online MMORPG where people live out their most depraved fantasies.

Director Jeffrey Reiner interweaves a number of links to BSG, including Joseph's surviving son William (Sina Najafi), who may have a promising career in the military ahead of him, and the aforementioned defense project which (if you haven't guessed) is going to end in tears and hurt feelings for a lot of people. But while the two series are of the same spirit (and one can have a great time connecting the dots between them), Caprica's quieter tone embraces the impending demise rather than the desperate resurrection. Society on Caprica is all-too close to our own: decadent and flirting with self-immolation while fanatics and madmen scheme to sweep it all away in one horrifying blow. Good men still exist within it, however: compromised like Adams, but endeavoring to find a way to a better future. Graystone embodies the flip side of that coin: benevolent intentions and aching loss blinding him to the monstrous evil he may be setting forth.

The Pilot fully allows us to immerse ourselves in those issues. It neither preaches nor condemns, but presents all sides of its ideas and lets the audience debate the pros and cons among themselves. Stoltz take full advantage of his Dr. Frankenstein moments, explaining eloquently how the abomination he endeavors to create is really for the common good, while the genially compromised Adams understands that some lines should never be crossed. How their differences affect the winding road to Armageddon has yet to be seen, but Caprica has the potential to make it every bit as riveting as its predecessor. The attention to cultural details remains as strong as it did on BSG, making repeat viewings almost as rewarding as the first one. That speaks well for a franchise which still has a lot of gas left in its tank: gas which Caprica knows exactly how to use.

I'm not sure why this is being reviewed now since it was available almost a year ago. Anyway, I know this show is supposed to deal with a lot of religious BS, but is that 'A' grade simply faith based? Is the logic here that, since the Galactica pilot was terrible but the show turned out great, making the Caprica pilot unwatchable will result in an even better series?

We need to accept that Galactica is over. There will be no sequels. What's more, its moment has passed so that even doing side stories like the awful "The Plan" won't really work. Prequels? Do prequels ever work? Maybe. The one thing a prequel can do is provide a new angle on a story you thought you knew that turns it all upside down. That is not going to happen in this series.

I liked it.

Almost a year ago? Try October or thereabouts. And it's being reviewed now because this is a review of the new broadcast version that went out on Friday night for the premiere?

It's too bad the pilot was unwatchable for you. I loved it, gave me a lot to look forward to as it did others who aren't SF fans that I know.

I rather liked it, though there was something bothering me, and I finally figured out what it was.  I know one's a fiction and the other is a dramatization of real events, but watching this was kind of like watching Tora Tora Tora:  you know what's coming, and you can see each little point  where it could be prevented, but you can't do anything but watch the oncoming disaster.

As always oko, don't know what hell you are talking about....Caprica aired friday night thus they reviewed it for everyone that hasn't seen it and your endless posts about BSG being over...really?  When did that happen?  No way!  Get otta town!  It's over??!??  Yes we all realize the obvious you keep pointing but please don't stop.  In fact I'm sure in a few weeks you'll be posting endless blogs about how much the show sucks yet you will keep watching it.

Alright, I must admit, I never watched Battlestar.  Didn't have SciFi, before that Syfy mess, and just never really had a chance to see it.

However, and for whatever reason, I decided to watch this Friday night.  And I really liked.  I liked it a lot.  I know a few things about the series, and caught a few things but I went in almost completely fresh and still enjoyed it.  Is religion that prevalent in BSG?  Not that it bothered me I just really wasn't expecting it.  I was a little confused about the two (?) planets and the different groups or people.  I don't know if this'll be explained or if I'll have to do my own research.

Bit of a rant, but I thought that I'd share the opinion of a BSG newbie.

Loved it.  Stoltz and Morales are excellent as is Torresani.  When I compare it to other recent sci-fi shows I like....better than Stargate Universe and definitely better than V and Flash Forward combined.

Got to say though that  I'm feeling a little Jake Lloyd with the kid playing Will Adama.  I'll keep watching because it's good drama so far and because, just maybe, Tricia Helfer will make an appearance as a human.

Did I just say "Will" Adama?  That's "Bill". Sorry.   Wish I could edit these posts after the fact.

The Caprica pilot that was just aired on Friday was released on dvd on April 21, 2009. I think that's what Oko was talking about.

I saw it back then, and frankly I wasn't as wowed by it as other people were. In fact, as I write this, I have SciFi on right now and the Caprica pilot is playing and I'm still rather unimpressed by it. Then again, the last season of BSG didn't do much for me (except for a few episodes here and there), and the preachiness of the final episode really just turned me off completely.

I may tune in if there's nothing else on, but I'm not going out of my way to watch it.

I stopped and deleted it from my tivo after the 1st 15 mins. But to all those who like it enjoy! :)
