CAPTAIN AMERICA Returns Briefly For Special Issue

Captain America may be coming back next year, as a different person, but Steve Rogers did briefly return from the dead for a newly released special comic. Well, sorta.  In the fifth of a special comic series strictly published for the military, Marvel Comics brought the character back in the latest issue of The New Avengers: The Spirit of America, reports the AP. The issue focused on a videotape made by Rogers shortly before the assassin's bullet ended his life.

But when AAFES asked Marvel officials to include the hero in the latest military issue to be released before Veterans Day, they agreed because no other character better symbolizes the heroism and patriotism of the American soldier, Sabouni said.

The story begins with Captain America on a videotape asking his fellow Avengers to protect a soldier serving overseas and her brother, a National Guard member stationed in the U.S., from a terrorist organization.

Marvel Comics previously announced that another person will take over the mantle of Captain America early next year. His identity has not been revealed, and the costume will be revised, said Michael Pasciullo, Marvel's vice president of merchandising and communications.

Marvel Comics started the military series in 2005 after getting a call from a young boy, saying he could no longer afford to send comics to his two brothers serving in Iraq, Sabouni said.

Marvel sent the boy a box of comics but wanted to do more, so the company started working with AAFES to develop something just for soldiers. The military series has been very popular, with books selling quickly after their release.

"You have the fantasy aspect, but they're staying true to our culture," said Lt. Col. William Thurmond, an AAFES spokesman. "You can't ask for anything more if you're a comic book fan."

Big thanks to Scooper Daforce for passing it along..

I will stop getting Cap America if/when they replace him. I bet many will. It will be like Superman I imagine.

Bah, I'm sure Original Cap will be back. They've tried to replace him before and it didn't work. Besides no one stays dead in comics except Barry Allen and even he keeeps coming back for cameos and the like.

They used to say only Uncle Ben, Bucky and Jason Todd stay dead in comics. Well we have Bucky and Jason back (although I suspect Todd won't survive the Final Crisis.) Uncle Ben hasn't ever been brought back, has he? That's like bringing back Bruce Wayne's parents...without the death you don't have the motivation to become a superhero.

Though I read a few comics when I was younger, I did not start reading them regularly untill I was in the military. On my second tour in Bosnia, boredom would set in and I would read pretty much anything at our little Exchange. I ordered several issues while I was there and still read comics to this day.

A lot of guys in service appreciate what Marvel did...and they appreciate what Cap stands for. You can call him what you want to, say he's out of step with the times, but he's like Superman, Batman...and for that matter Beowulf, Gilgamesh, Sampson, King Arthur...he's an icon. He's the ideal of a hero with our own American twist...which has been reflected in every incarnation he's undergone, from Ideal Patriot to Jaded Idealist. He'll always be around.

The final pages should have Captain America busting into a room with GW Bush, Cheney, Falwell and Gonzales where they are doing lots of cocaine like they are known to do and Condescending Rice is in DougJones' stop motion suit in front of a blue screen and she is acting and turns out to be what is Osama Bin Laden

Based on comments #4 & 8, I'll let the readers draw their conclusions about who is on cocaine :-)
