With the first adaptation of the classic television series being a success for Warner Bros., it doesn't seem surprising to hear that the studio is currently developing Get Smart 2. Variety confirms it and reports that Steve Carell would return to play the title role of Maxwell Smart. The trade made no mention of co-stars Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, Alan Arkin or Terence Stamp returning though it seems likely that a few of them will be back for the second installment.
Though not part of this deal, Carell has also formed Carousel Productions, with plans of developing productions which he will not star in. Vance DeGeneres and Charlie Hartsock will run the shingle, which will take offices on the WB lot as part of a three-year first-look deal.
"Finding things to do as an actor is the first order of business, I suppose, but I’m not limited to things in my wheelhouse," Carell said. "I’m also looking for films I can produce that aren’t right for me as an actor."
Get Smart debuted in theaters on June 20, 2008 with an opening weekend haul of $38.6 million. It would go on to gross $224.0 million worldwide over the summer, based on a budget of only $80 million from Warner Bros.
I'm a big fan of Steve Carell and I think Anne Hathaway is amazing, but for me Get Smart was one of the dumbest movies of the summer. There were a few laughs, but I don't think I'll be dropping $7.50 on the sequel.
sportwarrior, I'm with you. Except the film wasn't dumb enough the way the show was it just wasn't as funny period. And Smart isn't supposed to be this competent, at least not on purpose. I may skip the sequel as well, ah who am I kidding, I'll be there even if it is with a grimace.
Congrats on the purchase Dazzler, welcom to the club.
I really enjoyed the first movie, as well as my family, but a sequel? These types of sequels never really pan out. I'm sure more mis-adventures of Smart will be easy to write, but doing a sequel because the first movie was a success it the first mistake. We can all agree to that, especially when it comes to comedies.
I'm a big fan of Carell's, since the Daily Show, and will be interested in seeing how this works. I think that they'd kind of have to bring Hathaway back cause aren't they a couple at the end?
I never finished watching the first one because it was the second film in the Double Feature at the Drive-In cause I fell asleep since it started after midnight and after The Dark Knight. But I liked what I did see and would like to finish watching it once its released on DVD. But I don't think a sequel or sequels would work unless they bring back the entire cast... Remember there was already a spin-off.
I'm not a fan of Carell and Hathaway is just so so, but I enjoyed this movie and my kids loved it. I'll be getting the Blu-ray for sure and making a family movie night out of Get Smart 2.
