After spending more than a year prepping the third MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE film, director Joe Carnahan has exited stage right. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carnahan left the sequel over "creative differences," which is Hollywood speak for just about anything.
What happens now with M:I 3 is anyone's guess. The movie is slated to begin shooting next month in Germany, and all of the film's announced stars (Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Carrie-Anne Moss, Scarlett Johansson and Kenneth Branagh) remain attached to the project. Paramount Pictures, the franchise's studio, announced at the start of the month that it was pushing back the movie's intended release date from May 6, 2005 to June 29, 2005. The departure of Carnahan could conceivably cause a further delay.
