NYCC 2013: Mattel Unleashes New Batman Figures!

89, 92, Arkham and Superman 78?

By Kimberly McCall     October 14, 2013

Batman 66 continues to Return in 2013!
This week, Mania was bumping its way through New York Comic Con in a quest to glimpse the panels, the cosplay, and, of course, the toys.
The Mattel booth was the place to be, this year. Now, I fully expected to stand there and drool over the 1960's Adam West Batman figures, complete with Batmobile. These little 6 inch gold mines are sculpted to perfection in every costume detail and facial expression. Every essential villain is present and Surf's Up Joker is ready for the waves.
What I did not expect to find were the slightly smaller  treasures in the case next door. Set for release in 2014 were a collection of figures from Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), as well as Superman (1978). Each stood at only 4 inches tall.
The Michael Keaton Batman, featured with and without cowl, was exactly the quality figure we wish we had when the original film was released. The only thing missing? Jack Nicholson's Joker. This was a noticeable absence considering the display featured BOTH villains from Batman Returns, Danny DeVito's Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman.  For 4 inch sculpts, these characters were astonishingly well crafted. They made me wish for, perhaps, a Max Shreck figure or a giant duck transport. What about a Joker or a balloon toting bat plane? Are there licensing issues? Bottom line, I walked away skipping and was left wanting more.

New Batman Arkham Origins: Arriving in the Spring of 2014

Also displayed at Mattel was a remarkable Christopher Reeve Superman figure and, just behind him, Terence Stamp's General Zod, who has been deserving of a figure this good for decades. Still, as excited as I was to see Zod, there was no sign of Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, or Jor -El.
The ornament hunt at Hallmark is always a treat for the holiday season. For those wishing to add a little pop culture to their tree, these 2014 gems will be worth snagging. I mean, who wouldn't want the Star Wars cantina band festooned by Christmas lights? Or perhaps a touch of classic Hollywood with a Cornelius Christmas? Not to mention the perfect decoration for fans who have been slowly collecting Batman ornaments since the sixties.
Aside from the Mattel and Hallmark highlights, here is a glimpse of other toy fare found on the showroom floor.

Its not even holiday 2013 yet, and I'm already planning a spot for holiday 2014 for that Alien tree ornament!

That C Reeve one is pretty great looking. That might need to replace the POP! Heroes Superman on the shelf in my office.

I think I just felt myself going broke in 2014.

I haven't bought a toy for myself in ages, but I forsee a great deal of temptation in my future.

Any specs on that Batmobile? Because in 1:12 scale (6") it's gotta be a pretty fair size, right?

The Btmaobile is for the 6 inch figures. They are showing up at TRU, saw one $59.99
