By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Friday, March 28, 2008

Dennis Quaid, Tyrese Gibson, Jon Tenney, Charles S. Dutton, Lucas Black, Kate Walsh, Adrianne Palicki, Kevin Durand and Willa Holland will join Paul Bettany in Legion, the Screen Gems thriller that marks the feature directing debut of Scott Stewart. The trade says shooting is about to get under way in New Mexico. David Lancaster and Michel Litvak are producing through their Bold Films, and Gary Michel Walters is executive producer. The spec was written by Stewart and Peter Schink.

Plot Concept: The thriller casts Bettany as the archangel Michael, the only one standing between mankind and an apocalypse, after God loses faith in humanity. Man's lone hope rests with a group of strangers who must deliver a baby they realize is Christ in his second coming.

Well here's a movie that's definitely going to piss off a lot of Christians out there. I'm not the type of Christian who's easily offended by films or material like this, but it's definitely going to be at least as controversial as The Da Vinci Code, if not more so. The idea of a civil war in Heaven that results in mankind siding with an angel and fighting back against God is really radical, especially if it features the Second Coming. What I can't figure out is why Christ would come back (in the world of the film anyways) if God lost His faith in mankind? I'm willing to bet the movie's concept is a lot more interesting than it's execution though.

By the way, has anyone seen the movie Gabriel? I know it came out on DVD recently and it sounded somewhat similar to this film.

I liked this movie when it came out as The Prophecy with Christopher Walken playing Gabriel. Viggo Mortensen playing Lucifer was great. He was almost as creepy as Walken.

not original, sorry.

I don`t see how this would cause any controversy at all. Its not like they are saying that any of this stuff is true. The Prophecy which is very similar to this didn`t cause any stir whatsoever. The original Prophecy with Christopher Walken was great and Viggo was damn creepy as Lucifer.
I do like the cast for this movie though, apart from Tyrese, because we all know he`s going to be the stereotypical black person in these types of movies that doesn`t believe what`s going on and spouts off stupid one-liners. If they want to stay away from crap like that, they should make him a priest in it or something.
Oh and Gabriel is terrible. Just think a really, really bad Sci-fi channel movie with music video style shooting.

Good point, rgtchtiger (about why Christ would...). I wonder if they'll address that in the movie. Probably not. A lot of solid B-level talent in this movie. Hopefully there's *something* in the script that sounded good. Worries me that it's a directorial debut, though.

Oh, and lusiphur, I agree. Prophecy kicked ass. Haven't seen any of the sequels, though. The franchise looked like it got pretty cheesy when it went DTV.

Wasn't the 7th Sign about this? And she had a baby at the end of the movie or something like that? Can't Remember.

I like these kind of movies because if nothing else, it should make people rethink some of their beliefs.

And Bigthor, I thought that was an excellent piece of sarcasm, to say that a movie based on a religion is not an original story (if you meant it that way, that is)

Yeah it's a little too similar sounding to Prophecy (great flick) to me. If they want to "original it up" a bit they should have archangel Michael retire to an Old Folk's Home in South Texas. His roommate could be an elderly Elvis... ah never mind.

Like others, I'm not easily offended and enjoy near-world's-end flicks... such as The Seventh Sign as godsonfilm pointed out.

To answer your question, rg', I suppose I could help start a debate on interpretations of The Bible and how there are some (not all) Christians who believe Christ will one day return not as a lamb, but as a lion to rule with force. And then I could point out that for others, what is really important is to focus on the Great Commandments, to love God and each other. But then if I were to do that, I'm sure SMS would jump in here and spout profanities and call people names for having any belief in a higher power. Then someone would point out that this is an article about that very topic and he should shut his hole if all he's going to do is attack people. And then SMS would continue to berate that person and everyone else and then it would all just bring everyone down.

So, I'll just say that joeyB's comment was pretty funny and move on. ;-p

I'm Catholic but I never get offended with these films, but there's always someone trying to get their face on tv that'll make a mountain out of a molehill, just like they did with DaVinci Code which turned out to be a piece of garbage. They're for entertainment anyway, I loved the Prophecy with Walken not so much the one with mutated animals.
joey you just reminded of Bubba Ho Tep. I need to pop that dvd, it's been a couple of years since I watched it.

Holy Crap, WISEGUY! The Prophecy with the mutant animals?!?!? I had completely forgotten that gawd-awful film. Remember the "bear" at the end. Man that was atrocious.
What's Bubba Ho-Tep?
