Boys...where do I start with this? First off,it doesn't matter where an actor is from because as long as he has the acting ability, personality, and looks to play a character then that's all that matters! I'm amazed that there are still people out there, including on this site, who ignorantly believe that only an American should play an "American icon" like Captain America. Hello,is there anyone home?!!! There are two superhero films that are among the greatest all-time in the genre(top five in my book)maybe you've heard about them or seen them...BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT!!! Both had English actors,Christian Bale as Batman and Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon. Both were outstanding and yet I didn't hear or read anyone on any forum state any opposition to their casting because they aren't American. Wiseguy, did you frown or cringe while seeing Bale and Oldman in both Batman films? You cannot have it both ways!!! Overall,I'm not crazy about this list. Too many of them are too old, don't look the part, don't have the acting ability or personality or leadership quality needed for such a role. The only one who stands out to me is Chris Pine. He is a very good actor, who has demonstrated intensity and leadership qualities in Star Trek. Being able to play a strong leader is one of the most important traits of CA. I'm astonished that I'm one of the few if any who has pointed that out. Chad, you've said that Pine isn't likely to play CA because we're not likely to see one actor play 2 or more iconic characters in our lifetime. Hello,Chad!...once again you've demonstrated your lack of research! You questioned whether or not people could accept a foreigner playing an American superhero but as stated above, did people not accept Christian Bale and Gary  Oldman in the Batman movies? Have you not noticed Arnold(Conan,Terminator),Harrison Ford(Han Solo,Indiana Jones,Jack Ryan),or Sly Stallone?(Rocky,Rambo). Each of the last 3 actors played more than one iconic character! This isn't the first time you've been reprimanded for your ignorance and given your track record, likely won't be your last! As I've told you before in another article,DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE ADOPTING A FORUM LIKE MANIA!!! P.S. Uber geek, the Canadian healthcare system doesn't suck but you obviously do for stating such an ignorance! America pays about 7 billion or more than Canada in a health system that includes America having people getting dropped from their HMOs when getting sick, facing huge healthcare premiums, paying insanely high drug prices, and families going bankrupt. Canada's healthcare system isn't perfect but we don't have such travesties taking place here!

Well spoken, keith!

Keith, no I didn't frown. I put Cap in a seperate class because he wears the flag and is supposed to stand for the country and not just against crime or evil. But like I said before, I won't boycott the film if they use a foreigner it's just that I prefer they use an American. I don't know what's so wrong with that. BTW I also wanted Skarsgard for Thor because not only does he have the look but he's Scandinavian to boot, although he isn't Asgardian unfortunately

Sam Worthington for an older Cap, Jensen Ackles for a younger Cap (but he needs to bulk up a little first).

Wiseguy, for the record,we're cool! I see what you're saying about preferably wanting an American to play such an "American icon." I'm not against the idea of exausting a search for American actors first and I agree that they should do that given Captain America's background. In fact,I knew that that was the reason for those wanting an American to be cast. Fortunately,Chris Pine fits the bill for the reasons that I already gave above(plus the fact that he's American so we can avert a crisis!)and if the producers of this new Captain America were wise then they'd at least consider him! If there was a casting call going out for an iconic Canadian figure,I'm sure those of us who are Canadian would prefer a Canadian to play that character and I'm sure here in Canada there'd be an uproar if someone else were cast! All I meant in my above sermon is that if the best choice of an actor to play him happens to be a foreigner(yes that would include those of us who are Canadian!)after exhausting the American talent pool then so be it! Although I don't always agree with your conclusions,Wiseguy, you do mention intelligent and entertaining points and you're definitely an asset to the Mania family!

Wiseguy, another thing I forgot to mention about the casting of Captain America. Earlier, you've mentioned Brandon Routh as a candidate. Are you kidding me? Last time I checked, that guy didn't even have the charisma or confidence to play the man of steel in Superman Returns and may have been a reason why he had so few lines in that movie. Although,I blame a bad script in part for that,if Routh couldn't really play Superman well, then why would anyone consider him for another iconic American superhero? Sorry,he's another bad choice!

Wiseguy 10/21/2009 3:30:18 PM

I was being a bit facetious about that keith, though I did like Routh as Superman and in general.

And yet, when Superman Returns was released...we all lined up and drank the KOOL-AID!

Not I, Moz...I waited to drink my Kool Aid on DVD.

Here is a thought, and I don't know why I didn't think of this guy sooner. MARK PAUL GOSSELAR!  Yeah I know, Zach from 'Saved By the Bell" might not be your choice, but consider, He is 36, old enough to be Cap, young enough to make a series of films with. He is over 6"2", and has proven with different roles he can bulk up. He can act, He was great in the last few years of NYPD Blue! Any thoughts? He is not a huge star, and this could be the vehicle that could move him into the mainstream. Girls would love him from his Saved by the Bell days, so it could and would help the Box Office be high! He wouldn't ask for a huge payday, this might be a good option!
