Marvel fukced up by not tapping Alexander Skaarsgard to play Thor.  I called this along time ago: if AS doesn't play Thor, he should play Captain America.  Generation Kill locked that up for me.

@Ubergeek: Are you Canadian or do you only listen to AM radio?  I have a good friend who moved to Canada and she says their healthcare is far and away better than ours.

edit: since when can we not use the F word here?

Actually I think Araron Eckhart would be operfect for Captain America. In The Dark Knight he played the kind of moral Crusader DA that would firt into a 1940s Gangster movie against guys like Edward G. Robinson and Humphrey Bogart. That would be perfect for Captain America, a man from a more morally idealistic time that trusts the System and the American way. A man who literally stepped in from the nineteen fouries. He should be Old School. And while he shouldn't be old, he should be old enough that when he challenges Ropbert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark for leadership of the Avengers we'll feel like her could and credibly Should win that leadership role. I dopn't see anybody else having the chops to pull that off against Robert Downey, Jr., except maybe Will Smith who's too morally conflicted in his best roles or Narthan Fillion who's too conmfortable in the moral grey in his best roles and ultimately too much like Robert Downey, Jr. himself to play his idealistic countertopoint. Their dynamic should one like Batman ansd Superman's dynamic on the Justice League. One's cynisim versus the other's moral certainty, always pulling the team between the two opptions.

BTW Filllion might be great for a SHIELD assigned sidekick a little more cynical a little more jokey, sort of like Bruce Campbell in Burn Notice. He might also make a pretty cool Hawkeye. Or a Green Arrow for that matter. Though I'd love to see him go after the Swordsman and deal with Hawkeye's daddy or surrogate daddy issues.   I think Fillion'd play that well.

I kind of like that idea of Jensen Ackles for Cap, but I'm honestly not sure if he could pull it off.  Every time I see him, no matter what he's in, I just picture smartass Dean Winchester...I love the character, but not sure I could separate Dean from Steve.

And I don't think the actor would necessarily HAVE to be American.  Hell, Shatner's a Canadian, but Kirk is one of the biggest American icons of all time.  If we were going to have a foreigner play Cap, I would throw Karl Urban's name into the ring.  The guy is athletic within reason, and the guy's acting astounds me.  I loved his portrayal of Eomer in "Lord of the Rings", and say what you want about the new Star Trek movie, but he WAS Bones.  I swear, I could close my eyes and almost hear Deforest Kelley.  The guy's speech inflections and mannerisms were spot on.

I still honestly think that Sam Worthington would still be an awesome Cap...despite being Australian...

But if we need an American actor...I think Jensen Ackles could do the role...I could see him leading a I always thought he was short, but it turns out he's like 6'1"...he just looks short next to Jared Padalecki (who's like 6'5")...

For Bucky, why not Anton Yelchin?  He's awesome.

For Red Skull...why not a German actor?  I mean I could just be imagining things, but the last time I checked...Red Skull was the German super-soldier...more-or-less...I mean if we are demanding an American actor for Cap, why not a German (who speaks English) actor for Red Skull?  I mean that doesn't seem too out ther to work.

Nick Fury though?  I really don't see him in a WW2 period piece...he's more a Vietnam era soldier.

Since we're doing WW2, why not bring in some other characters to help flesh out the world a little more, a worled where superheroes fought Nazis.  You could use Namor, or the orginal Human Torch (Jim Hammond), maybe Union Jack...use some of the other heroes that populated the world during the time, that would also help increase the international appeal of a movie about Captain America.

I don't know what the big deal is about nationality I said, a Canadian played Captain, a Brit plays Dr. Gregory House (love that show)...face it, a lot of the really good actors nowadays are from other countries.  Just get the best actors for the job, I say...and I do love that idea of having other 40's era Marvel characters in cameos...doubtful the film makers will be that nice to us superfans, but hey, one can dream.

I've been less than impressed with his acting abilities thus far, monelonmonday...but you're right, he is looks and age appropriate.  Maybe he is a good actor...could just be the stank of Smallville keeping him

Wiseguy 10/14/2009 10:32:27 AM

Brandon Routh for Captain America, at least he's Ameican and that's the most important thing, well one of the most important things

mbeckham, you're on to something there with Fillion being a SHIELD agent. How about Eric O'Grady, who later goes on to steal the ther AntMan suit
