CBS Paramount Domestic Television is releasing digitally remastered episodes of the iconic 1960s STAR TREK sci-fi series, with all new special effects and music, to celebrate the groundbreaking series' 40th anniversary, it was announced today by John Nogawski, president of CBS Paramount Domestic Television.

The new episodes also mark the first time in 16 years that the original "Star Trek" series can be seen in broadcast syndication. The episodes will begin airing on the more than 200 stations that own the rights to the weekend broadcast syndication window starting Sept. 16 (check local listings for station and dates). All 79 episodes of the original "Star Trek" series will eventually be remastered, with the first batch of episodes chosen from a list of "Star Trek" fans' favorite shows.

The most noticeable change will be redoing many of the special effects, created with 1960s technology, with 21st century computer-generated imagery (CGI). That includes:

- Space ship exteriors -- The space ship Enterprise, as well as other Starships, will be replaced with state of the art CGI-created ships. The new computer-generated Enterprise is based on the exact measurements of the original model, which now rests in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

- Show opening -- The Enterprise and planets seen in the main title sequence will be redone, giving them depth and dimension for the first time.

- Galaxy shots -- All the graphics of the galaxy, so frequently seen through the window on the Enterprise's bridge, will be redone.

- Exteriors -- The battle scenes, planets and ships from other cultures (notably the Romulan Bird of Prey and Klingon Battle Cruisers) will be updated.

- Background scenes -- Some of the iconic, yet flat, matte paintings used as backdrops for the strange, new worlds explored by the Enterprise crew will get a CGI face-lift, adding atmosphere and lighting.

The refurbished episodes also feature higher quality sound for the famous opening theme. The original score by Emmy Award-winning composer Alexander Courage has been re-recorded in state-of-the-art digital stereo audio with an orchestra and a female singer belting out the famous vocals. A digitally remastered version of William Shatner's classic original recording of the 38-word "Space, the final frontier..." monologue continues to open each episode.

The remastered episodes have been converted from the original film into a High-Definition format, which gives viewers a clearer, crisper, more vibrant picture than before, even when viewed in standard definition. Once stations upgrade and start broadcasting HD signals, the episodes will be all ready for viewers to enjoy in HD."

@edgreyshadow... I dunno, if I was a fan of Star Trek I think I would rather have a copy of the originals. Although they aren't untouched (they got restored and upgraded some years ago) they are still ture to the original show. Look at all the fans who clammerd for the original Star Wars trilogy to be put on DVD without Lucas's crappy alterations.

#3 That was my first reaction too. Oh well... as long as all the really scary lizard-men aliens remain guys in rubber suits, I'll be okay.

They have to do this for the new movie so it will be more seemless than Enterprise was. The NX ship looked more avanced than TOS Ship so in the new fans and viewers the movie will ressemble the TOS and make the new flick more appealing to the cg crowd of today! Bravo! Paramount you guys may not be complete Hollyweird Tools!!

I like the Star Wars Special Editions as much as the next guy, but enough is enough. Sales of the TOS DVD's must have been very strong, and although this is the 40th Anniversary of TOS, I still find it an odd move.

Not all Trekkies are pedophiles, but all pedophiles are trekkies. http://www.macleans.ca/topstories/justice/article.jsp?content=20050530_106573_106573

@wrrlykam I wouldn't call Lucas generous. More like greedy. Theres been 2 releases of the Original Box set since 2004, none containing the unedited versions, even though people have been begging for unedited oens since before he released it the first time. The releases he is popping out this month will be as they said limited and the only time ever you will be able to get them. so i'm taking that to mean that when they finally do bring out the box set of the whole double-trilogies that the unedited ones won't be on it. As much as a Star Wars fan as I WAS, I aint gonna buy a single DVD untill there 1 box set with everything and everything, otherwise he don't get my money.

I grew up watching the show, too, and I don't mind a bit if they update the SFX. the tests I've seen so far look promising. I think Roddenberry would have been thrilled at the news. it will be interesting to see if the cheap sets look even cheaper in HD; they weren't built to be seen in high resolution. hopefully they will consider Shatner's season three toupee a SFX that needs retooling!

I hope they redo the alien that eats through rock on that mining planet. I thought that always looked like crap, but I don't know If I'd change the cute little "trouble with" creatures, what ever the hell they were called. I'm ok with this. In fact I can't wait to see them.

Holy God, this is amazing!! I'm glad CBS is making such a very bold move on Star Trek: the Old Lucasized Series. hahahaha! I'm actually looking forward to it. Star Trek purists must be foaming in the mouths.

The "special" effects of ST:TOS are special on the short bus way. This will help the series to be less laughably pathetic.
