TheComics Continuum caught writer Michael Chabon at a recent book signing inAnn Arbor, Mich., while on tour promoting his book Summerland. Chabon said he'smaking progress on the screenplay for the Spider-Man sequel, The AmazingSpider-Man.
"It'sgoing pretty good," Chabon said on Tuesday night.
"It's abit tricky when you're on a book tour and you're also trying to write ascreenplay, but I'm really enjoying it," Chabon said. "I still can'tquite believe that I get to do this. It's such a treat."
Although hesaid it's not a ground-floor rewrite for The Amazing Spider-Man,Chabon told The Continuum that he has not read previous drafts by David Koepp,who wrote Spider-Man, and by Smallville executiveproducers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. "I don't know what was inthem," he said.
Spider-Manstar Tobey Maguire appeared in Wonder Boys, which was based on a Chabon book.
"I thinkhe's wonderful," Chabon said of Magiure. "He was in Wonder Boys,y'know, and he was great. I've talked to him a couple of times and he seems likea very nice person."
Chabon remainedtight-lipped about the story elements for the Spider-sequel.
Chabon has donehis first comics writing, for the JSA: All-Stars mini-series next year from DCComics.
"I agreedto do it because they gave me a chance to write one of my favorite costumedsuper-hero characters, Mr. Terrific," Chabon told the audience. "Ifyou don't know about Mr. Terrific, and I'm not making this up, he has no powers.He has no powers. But he is really good at stuff. On his chest instead of theusual symbol, he has the words, 'Fair Play.' It's kind of a Wes Anderson kind ofa character.
"So Iasked if he was taken - because this is sort of a book where there are differentwriters for different characters -- and when they said he was still available, Isaid I'd do it.
"What Iwrote about was Mr. Terrific's younger brother, who was not so terrific, andwhat it's like to have Mr. Terrific as a brother."
Chabon's storywill appear in the second issue, with art by Michael Lark.
