Charlize Theron has been cast opposite Viggo Mortensen in the upcoming adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's THE ROAD, says Variety. John Hillcoat (The Proposition) is directing the 2929 Entertainment project, based from a screenplay by Joe Penhall. Dimension Films, a branch of the Weinstein Company, will handle the distribution. Shooting is scheduled to begin this month.

Plot Concept: Story centers on a man (Viggo Mortensen) who embarks on a nightmarish road trip after a nuclear explosion in an attempt to transport his son to safety while fending off cannibals. Theron, who will play the wife of Mortensen's character, will be seen mostly in flashback.

The post apocolyptic genre is one of my favorites, but it's one where you very rarely get really good stories. Although i have never read the road, I have heard good things, and IMHO Viggo has been on a role since Rings. Theron just strengthens the opinion that this is going to be something special.

I was reading the description of this book awhile ago because it's the same author of 'No Country for Old Men' and it seemed like it'd be an awesome book; guess I'd better get to it before the movie comes out because as of late-thought I haven't seen Eastern Promises yet-I'm game for anything Viggo does. Maybe that's going a little far but he was good in History and an old movie called American Yakuza. There are others I like but can't think of them...yeah, I know he was in LoR too but everyone was good in that; more of an ensemble thing than his own movie.

Eastern Promises was awesome.

I read the road and it was great. The wife's role in the novel takes up 3 pages at most, but for someone like cormac, that's all he needs for a character to have a lasting effect. Again great casting, still it all comes down to who plays the kid.

madmaniac999, I've got a great idea for a post-apocolyptic movie, the problem is...I have no idea how to write a script treatment or a script; and I've got a lot of ideas for movies! Michael

I've read The Road and it was good. But unless they write more into her character than was in the book, Theron won't be on screen much at all. I was actually thinking about NOT seeing this movie, even though it will probably be good. I just don't know if I want to be in a theater full of crying women. (and probably some men too). And I agree with goatartist, this movie's success will hinge on casting the boy. Mortensen is great casting as the father though.

Goatarist, you read my mind. She is in the book for MAYBE 3 pages, but I that scene with her is very haunting. The book was one of the most disturbing I've ever read and I think about it often. It made me want to get a shopping cart to take home just in case.

It is a very small part but it's smart casting. Even though she'll only be on screen for a few minutes (guessing) she'll make a lasting impression on the story, the same way her character did in the book.

mlauzon, pick up syd field's screenwriting book and never look back. this is also a good resource: http://www.screenwriting.info/ BEst of luck to you! I myself am a fledgling writer/screenwriter. Finishing up my first short in March! Never give up. It took Peter Jackson 4 years to make Bad Taste and look at him now!

This is now my most anticipated upcoming film. Casting Viggo for this flick was a stroke of genius...he'll really show the needed tenderness as a father shepherding a son across an apocalyptic landscape. I highly recommend reading the book...it was phenomenal.
