Two days ago, AICN released a casting sheet from JJ Abram's Bad Robot productions for STAR TREK XI. The casting sheet for which they said was "confirmed" ask for some young actors to fill in the spots of the old TOS crew. Here's what they leaked out.

[JAMES KIRK] 23-29 Handsome, cocky self assured and earnest. Great physical condition. 6 ft or less

[LEONARD(BONES)MCOY] -28-32 Medic on the Enterprise. Smart, clever and a bit danger-loving. Dark hair, blue eyes.

[UHURA] 25ish -African American. Brilliant, beautiful, heroic and FUN!, Uhura is almost tom-boyish - as if she grew up in a houseful of brothers.

[SULU] 25-32 -Asian American male (preferably Japanese). Helmsman on the Enterprise. Extremely fit, capable and dedicated. A bit of a wildcat

[MONTGOMERY(SCOTTY) SCOTT] -28-32 a brilliant ship's engineer. Must be able to do a flawless Scottish accent!

There is no mention of Spock there because that role was already taken by Zachary Quinto (Sylar from Heroes).

So the question a lot of people had from that leaked casting call was "Why isn't Checkov" on that list?".

That question has been answered. Hollywood Reporter has announced that Abrams has cast Russian born actor, Anton Yelchin, to portray the the role of Pavel Checkov. No confirmed plot details thus far but the common belief is that it chronicles the early days of the Enterprise crew during their time at Starfleet Academy and perhaps has a flash forward which would explain an older Nimoy and Shatner reprising their roles. If this speculative plot is true in anyway, it will lead to some questions from "Trekkies" considering the mythology surrounding the character of Pavel Checkov within the Trekverse.

It should also be noted that two nights ago, IGN rekindled the wildfire rumor going last year about Tom Cruise having a cameo as "Capt Pike" in the film. JJ Abrams and Cruise worked together last on MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III lending to why this rumor has gone as long as it has. IGN insists once again that they have a credible source inside saying JJ Abrams really wants Cruise to do this cameo. As to whether he will or not, that's the real question. Everyone knows the bad blood that went on last year between Paramount and Cruise after their movie contract severed under the public spotlight & scrutiny. As to whether the actor is willing to let bygones be bygones with the studio and do this cameo for the director Abrams, who really knows. I know his publicist has insisted once again that the rumor is not true. Until the confirmation has been given, it's still the same wild rumor it was back last year.

STAR TREK XI begins filming on November 5. It's expected to be released December 2008 somewhere around Christmas.

Wow. I don't believe it. Can't really say why for certain, but Chekov has always been my favorite OS character. This ought to be interesting.

If I were him I'd get back into that swimming pool! Quoting another movie, "This isn't where I parked my car..."

Is he gonna say "Nu-Clee-ar...VWESSELS" anywhere in the movie? And does the Trek universe really need a Cruise cameo? Not for nothing, but if they're wanting to have Pike as a cameo, I'd go with Ray Liota. He looks a good deal more like Jeffrey Hunter than Tom "I'm a crazy scientologist who claims to know the history of pharmaceuticals" Cruise.

I assumed Chekov wasn't on the list because he's about ten to 15 years younger than Kirk. That means this guy has to be about 13 years old. Is he?

That aside, McCoy was never "danger-loving," Uhura was anything but "tom-boyish," and Sulu was very disciplined, not much of a "wildcat."

I like the idea of putting Star Trek in the hands of people who aren't really familiar with it because it gives a fresh perspective, but maybe they shouldn't be doing established characters.

If Chekov is 10 years younger than Kirk he would be 18 to 20 years old, and he was a ensign on the original show.
This would explain why Khan knew Chekov in The Wrath of Khan, Chekov's character was on the Enterprise just not featured in the first season stories.

Both Chekov and Sulu were much younger then Kirk and the others.

The reason behind the Khan Chekov reference is due to the fact that in the original draft of the script it was supposed to be Sulu in that scene and not chekov. I think another poster pointed this out in a previous thread but Chekov was intruduced in the second season interviewing with Kirk and Spock. I wouldn't say he's 10 years younger but he was supposed to be a bit younger than the crew.

The actor they hired is 18, so he's right in line with Chekov's age. Ironically, Koenig was 30 when he started playing the role.

With each piece of news we learn about this movie, I get more and more skeptical about it. Now, I'm far from an expert on TOS, but I'm sure someone can answer this: Is there any chance that this movie will fit into established continuity? When the original series started, with Kirk as Captain, how long had everyone been on the Enterprise? Did all these characters know each other from before the series premiere? Is Abrams going the Smallville route, with a total reimagining (Lex and Clark friends when they were young)?

while i like the idea ( i won't say love ) of restarting things, and i like the idea of having a shatner/nimoy cameo or whatever. i loved the original cast. they had on screen chemistry, especially mccoy, kirk, and spock. the idea of other actors playing these parts....bothers me. i can't imagine liking a new portrayal. i hope i'm proven wrong and like it. but i'm not optimistic.
