It looks like the 1998 Disney movie Mulan just wasn't good enough for China Film Group and their newly partnered shingle Xinhua Media Entertainment. The two plan to bring a live-action take of the legendary Chinese girl-warrior previously popularized by Walt Disney. The production is set around an $30 million budget with co-production being handled by MoviePlus and Arclight. Shooting should begin in the spring in China.
Brough and Stephen Waterman, of MoviePlus in Los Angeles, will produce with XME managing director David Lee, former head of the Weinstein Co.'s Asia film fund.
"China Film and Xinhua came in with significant funding to make this a co-production when we met them at Cannes in May," Brough said. "They liked that we were taking a Hollywood approach to a classic Chinese story."
