Cohen and Ferrell Lead SHERLOCK HOLMES - Jul 02, 2008 - 08:45am
Actually... I've been to 221B Baker Street (almost 15 years ago now... when I was in 9th grade). Its an interesting story, back when Arthur Conan Doyle was writing the stories, the street ended a couple blocks short of the 200's addresses and there was no 221B. Later on the road was expanded and the address did exist, so there is a historical marker there. I think its a bank or financial management house. The inspirational setting for his address was a boarding house on Baker Street at a different address, that location has indeed been turned into a museum as monkeyfoot pointed out.
As to Ferrell, I'll put his roll in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back up there with just about any cameo in a comedy. Like any other "over the top" comedian, he has his hits and misses. Anchorman, 40YOV, and Talladega are generally regarded as his "hits" and there are a handfull of misses to go with them. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
HANCOCK: Superman III 1/2? - Jul 02, 2008 - 08:00am
"Obviously Jason Bateman like a few other 80`s stars have made a come back in their careers. When is Justine going to do something?"
Ahhh... Mallory Keaton, my first love.
First SOLACE Trailer Online Now - Jun 30, 2008 - 03:38pm
I had the Chris Cornell theme song to Casino Royale stuck in my head yesterday morning just after I woke up... odd isn't it? "You Know My Name" was pretty awesome as a Bond song. I promptly popped the DVD in the machine and watched the movie. I can't reiterate enough just how awesome that movie was.
I enjoyed the Brosnan ones in their own right... but Casino Royale was just a different Bond. I could honestly picture Craig as a government assassin. Not so much with any of the other Bonds (Connery included despite the fact that he was and still is the definitive Bond).
I will most definitely be in line to see this on opening day. The teaser is enough to make me irrationally excited.
Rudewordsmith asks "then what's he doing shacking up with this new chick?"
For the answer to this question, I will turn to Wikiquote's entry on "You Only Live Twice."
Bond: [about to make love to Helga Brandt] "Oh the things I do for England."
New Videos for Blizzard's DIABLO III - Jun 30, 2008 - 08:25am
Diablo 2 launched with 5 classes and the expansion added 2 more.
Starcraft 2 should see the light of day long before D3, but I wouldn't rush out to upgrade your computers just yet... I wouldn't be surprised to see SC2 in December 2009 and D3 December 2010. The good news is, I've never seen Blizzard release a half-finished game. You can bet your bottom dollar that it will be a completed and polished product.
Book Buzz: Diablo Day - Jun 30, 2008 - 08:21am
That Shareware CD brings back memories... I think you could play 3 or 4 levels as both the humans and orcs before a level where you just get creamed with opposing forces filling every pixel of screen space. Good times. Reminds me of the days when a 14.4 modem was hot stuff...
I've never actually read any of the Diablo or Warcraft books. Knaack isn't the worst author to put pen to paper in the Dragonlance world though, so maybe I should during my next lull in reading material.
BLOODHEIR - Jun 28, 2008 - 06:33am
Finished the book last night. I think I probably liked it better than Pat, but I certainly agree with all of his points. My overall impression was that it was indeed a middle book.
On the plus side, I thought the pacing in this book was better than Winterbirth. It took me a good while to get into a good reading "flow" on that one, but I was able to run with this one much easier. Probably the best scene in the book for me wasn't the big battle at the end, but the first battle towards the middle of the book. I thought Ruckley did a great job of characterising the frantic confusion of a battle where everything is going to **** in the middle of a snowstorm.
All in all, not a bad second effort. I'll certainly read Fall of Thanes if only to know how things finish up.
McGowen & Rodriguez Team Up for RED SONJA - Jun 27, 2008 - 04:34am
Clearly the general public was clamoring for this film...
Its about time someone in Hollywood listened to the masses!
CLOVERFIELD 2 On Hold, 300 Prequel Coming - Jun 26, 2008 - 02:43pm
I'm coming late to the conversation... but on the Predator news front. In the paper today, it was announced that Sonny Landham (the American Indian guy from the first Predator) is running for senate as a Libertarian against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Name one action movie that has had more stars go on to political aspirations! Name one! The Guhvanator. Check. Jesse "The Body" Ventura. Check. Now this guy (who apparently also did porn in the 70's). I say Carl Weathers for McCain's VP!!!
Blizzard's STARCRAFT II Hitting Dec 3? - Jun 24, 2008 - 11:50am
I'd tend to agree with Goldeneyez and Maka. I'll believe it when I see it.
And 6 months out seems a little early for Blizzard to be setting an actual date.
New Spy Photos for TRANSFORMERS Sequel - Jun 23, 2008 - 11:32am
Ponyboy... my first car was a burgundy '87 Camaro. I was so white trash, it even had a leather bra on the front when I got it!
New Featurette for Bond's SOLACE - Jun 20, 2008 - 07:24am
Loved Casino Royale and everything about the new bond. Also loved the old Bond stuff. I consider it like Connery's reply to the Asian girl in You Only Live Twice when she asked if he likes Asian girls better "Not better, just different."
Glory Road was okay as long as you don't take it too seriously. Like any other movie, it takes a few too many liberties with history to consider it "accurate." There's a line in the movie where the coach of Texas Western's all black team says they'll run up and down the court and run the all white Kentucky team out of the gym... too bad that when you look at college basketball history, Adolph Rupp practically invented the fast break and Kentucky played a pace of basketball that season that had nearly 15 more possessions a game than the pace of Texas Western. /shrug
Orci Says 20 Robots Battling in TRANSFORMERS 2 - Jun 02, 2008 - 05:29am
My only concern with having that many Transformers in the movie is that the designs may get confusing. It was difficult enough keeping track of who was who in the first movie. The Decepticons were particularly tough to follow.
I enjoyed the first movie quite a bit, and I'm in the same boat as Whiskey. Big robots + Explosions = Win.
Bryce Howard Taking Over in TERMINATOR Trilogy - Jun 02, 2008 - 05:24am
"the role exited by Charlotte Gainsbourg in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins after the actress ran into a scheduling conflict with a French comedy"
Did I read that right? The original actress passed up the possibility to make big money over the course of three movies for a French comedy???? Are the French even mildly amusing????
Singer Shirley Manson Joins SARAH CONNOR - May 29, 2008 - 02:23pm
Holy Cow! She's still around????
I thought maybe she fell off the side of the Earth or something after Garbage did the main title for The World is Not Enough. I haven't heard anything from them in a decade!
The Top 10 Hot But Mostly Bothered Video Game Females - May 29, 2008 - 10:26am
I'd like to add my wife's mage from World of Warcraft to the list, mainly because the chick controlling her can be a rampaging psycho 78.5% of the time.
Top Seven Reasons Hardcore Gamers Don't Matter Anymore - May 28, 2008 - 12:44pm
I may give it a try. My one "guilty pleasure" game that I'm going to pick up is Dynasty Warriors: Gundam. I've never really been into Gundam (just didn't know where to start basically) but I love the mindless "beat em up" gameplay of Dynasty Warriors... and the thought of crossing that with giant robots just sounds completely and totally awesome. I don't expect to have a quality gaming experience with it... but I do expect to mindlessly mash buttons and watch robots explode.
Top Seven Reasons Hardcore Gamers Don't Matter Anymore - May 28, 2008 - 08:03am
"Mario is no Ratchet And Clank"
Are you kidding me???? I agree with pretty much everything else you said, but Mario Galaxy blows away any other platformer out there.
I've got a Wii and it basically sits there for use with first party games as others have noted. Mario Galaxy, Zelda, Mario Kart, the obligatory Wii Sports and Wii Play. That's about it. I don't know if the third party people just havn't figured out good ways to make use of the Wii or maybe since the money is in cross-platform releases, the lower computing power and odd control scheme of the Wii makes it difficult for the third party devs. Nintendo is only developing for the Wii, so it is easy for them to make games specifically tailored to the Wii-experience.
I'll be plunking down the cash for a PS3 in about two weeks when the first "must have" game of the new generation for me comes out. That's right the MGS4 bundle has my name written all over it. Once I have the investment in place, I will pick up the games I've been interested in but didn't make me feel like I needed the console. Assassin's Creed, Devil May Cry 4, etc.
New Set Photos for TRANSFORMERS 2 Online - May 27, 2008 - 01:00pm
Completely off topic... I would be hard pressed to remember a movie that disappointed me more than Indiana Jones. Ordinarily, I'm Positive Pete when it comes to movies. I like movies that many people seem to hate. I liked Transformers and Superman Returns for what they were. I like the movies that everyone seems to like. I liked X-Men 2 and Spiderman 2. I like alien movies. I like adventure movies. I like movies from my childhood. I like new movies. Basically, its pretty tough to make me feel that I was fully disappointed in a movie. Effectively, that movie last night had my brother and I leaving the theater as Negative Nancies. However, none of my gripes have to do with Harrison Ford's age or Shia LeBouf's acting. (FWIW... I like the kid and think the flack he gets is your typical anti-whatever's populer haranguing that you see around the net.)
Spoilers incoming...
I can accept that the Indy movies have always been about "fantastical" things. I know that Raiders had ghosts running around melting faces, ToD had a guy pull out a heart and the victim lived, Crusade had a 1000 year old knight. I get that. The one thing all those movies had in common though was an element of faith and the unexplained. Kingdom left none of that. Honestly, I was okay with the movie right up until the end of the movie when they took away that element of faith and the unexplained by having a giant UFO rise out of the Amazon jungle.
IMHO, a much more effective and Indy-esque ending could have salvaged the movie by entering the room with the 13 skeletons and placing the skull on the missing throne. Then have the Russian chick come in there and request all the knowledge. Now here's where I change it... no interdimensional rifts, no flying saucers; just have her head explode from the sheer amount of psychic knowledge and then start the collapse of the cave. Indy and crew escape as per the original ending. The walls of the crater collapse and the mighty Amazon floods the whole area with no evidence left of the temple. Problem solved. Mystery remains. Faith is required.
If they had gone that way with it, I would have rated it on par with ToD but not as good as Crusade or Raiders. As it stands, I feel that George Lucas has raped my childhood. Hell... I even liked the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Obviously they were sub-standard compared to the originals... but I thought they were worthwhile and enjoyable viewing. This took everything about Indiana Jones and pissed on it.
Just my $0.02. Back on topic... I'm looking forward to Transformers 2.
Book Buzz: Starship Troopers Nostalgia - May 26, 2008 - 04:53am
Glad you mentioned StarCraft up there... everything about that game was fantastic and I felt like the human campaign of the Brood War expansion really used some of the same propaganda type themes. If some producer had decided to make a Starship Troopers game, they could have just spliced different names into the cutscenes and would have had essentially their story with a great game! Denise Richards as Kerrigan! Casper Van Diem as Jim Raynor!
In addition to the fantastic co-ed shower scene that was mentioned, my most vivid memory from that movie is when they take the helmet off that guy during training and he promptly gets his head blown off.
Top Maniacal Rumors: Spidey Madness & Arrow Enemies - May 23, 2008 - 11:26am
""We had to get Soundwave in there," Orci said. "You know, we had Ravage in an early draft of the first movie and Soundwave, and we couldn't do it right and I think this time hopefully we'll have the ability to do it.""
Okay... how hard would it have been for Soundwave to have been the "home base" for all of the little decepticons that we saw and send them on the espionage mission on Air Force One?
Wes, your idea for Spiderman comes up everytime there's a story about the movies and I never get tired of hearing it. Definitely the best idea I've heard on it. Its a shame that if they were going to film movies back to back that they didn't save Venom for that. How much better would SM3 have been if it had ended with Brock getting the suit on him or something that left Spiderman 4 to deal with it instead of wrapping it up in less than 20 minutes?
HOBBIT Enters Pre-Production with Returning Cast - May 21, 2008 - 06:53am
Agreed Hanso.
WarCry, I'm sure a little detail like that won't stop them! Besides, in some of the backstory included in Tolkein's notes there's plenty of stuff Aragorn was doing. If they take the two movies right up to the start of Fellowship, they can have him tracking Gollum through the Misty Woods (isn't that their name?) and to the very base of the Mts of Mordor. Legolas can easily show up when the elves take the dwarves hostage or during the Battle of the Five Armies. There's plenty of opportunities there.
George Lucas Talks INDY 5 - May 19, 2008 - 11:56am
So is there a scene in this movie where you discover that both Indy and his son slept with the same woman?
Book Buzz: The Legacy of Star Wars Fiction - May 12, 2008 - 11:07am
Lucas would have been better off if he had scrapped everything he had in mind for the prequal and called up Timothy Zahn to write it for him. Lord knows if he ever decides to write a "canon" third trilogy that contradicts the "Empire Trilogy" or "Jedi Academy" he should probably sell Skywalker Ranch and go hide somewhere in the Australian Outback where nobody can find him.
TERMINATOR 4 is PG-13? - May 05, 2008 - 04:50am
My first reaction to this was dismay, but I'm wracking my brain for the few memories I have of T3. Nothing in there really stands out as being "R worthy." Even as I think back to T2, I don't know what exactly qualified it for an R rating. I don't think it will effect the quality of the movie much. As was noted in the article, PG-13 is different now than it once was. Basically, violence gets you PG-13 these days and sex gets you R. I don't know that we need graphic scenes of Christian Bale having sex in an underground lair anyways.
Teresa Palmer Joining TRANSFORMERS 2? - May 03, 2008 - 06:21am
I've been trying to think all morning where I had seen her picture before on this site... I even knew it was that exact same shot used in this article. Finally I have decided that unless I am misremembering things (thank you Roger Clemons for that word) she was tagged to play Wonder Woman.
Paperback Review: Winterbirth - May 02, 2008 - 06:28am
I mentioned it in the interview thread, but I really did like the book overall. It was definitely slow to get into and I never did manage to get any "marathon" reading sessions in on it. By the time I finished, I really did like the characters and the backstory though. One thing I liked most was the fact that characters were not necessarily put out there as "good" or "bad" (well with the exception of Aeglyss... and even he gets a story arc explaining things). The opening prologue of the last stand of The Hundred made me think the Black Road would be the protagonists. I liked that about the book. The ending of the book really sets things up for some interesting developments in book 2. I'm looking forward to Bloodheir this summer.
Lockup Issues Reported for GTA IV - May 01, 2008 - 10:29am
I'm just glad its happening on both systems. My God! Can you imagine the fanboy fueled flamewar that would erupt across teh intrawebz if only one system had the issues?
Mania Exclusive Interview: Winterbirth Author Brian Ruckley - Apr 28, 2008 - 06:22am
Arrrgh... as I look over my above post, I am more convinced than ever that the internet is determined to ruin all things about the English language! Paragraphs are a good thing you know.
Mania Exclusive Interview: Winterbirth Author Brian Ruckley - Apr 28, 2008 - 06:21am
Winterbirth was an odd experience for me. I enjoyed the book and how it was written... but it took me forever to read it. It just seemed like I was reading so very slowly and I couldn't get myself to sit down and complete any marathon reading sessions of a hundred pages or so at a time.
It certainly was a very well imagined world. I also like that he included a map. None of that hoity-toity, high and mighty "John Grisham doesn't need a map, why do I?" of Tairy Goodkind and others. (Joe Abercrombie needs to break down and give a map.) I also liked how the villain of the story got a real story arc. In fact, his story arc was just as sweeping and possibly more detailed than the protagonist.
One of the most fascinating parts of it was that I honestly feel that with a slightly different twist on the Black Roads, we'd be considering them the "good guys." I know that when I read the opening prologue of the last stand of The Hundred, I thought the Bloods of the Black Road would be the protagonist point of view.
All in all, a good book that stands as an obvious "first book" in a trilogy. Speaking of trilogies... I'm curious about how he knows it will definitively be a trilogy. If I'm not mistaken, GRRM planned on ASoIaF being a trilogy and Jordan planned on WoT being a sextet. A little off on both of those marks aren't we?
Air Force Enlisted into TRANSFORMERS 2 - Apr 26, 2008 - 06:28am
Aerial Bots vs Devastator would be cool... but I don't see it happening. And besides, how does this all fit in with the announcement from Bay that everything you hear on the net about the movie will be mis-information?
If I'm not mistaken, that avatar is from a Conan O'Brien "If they made it" segment isn't it? I'm not sure which celebrities it paired up though. Maybe Brittney Spears and someone?
Ewan McGregor Helping Hank's DEMONS - Apr 25, 2008 - 12:15pm
(Possible spoilers in my musings.)
Its been a while since I read Angels and Demons (better than Da Vinci Code IMO), but I seem to recall a prominent Vatican insider in the story who becomes the new pope and eventually the main antagonist... any chance this could be Obi Wan's role in the move? Of course, it may be that I'm completely misremembering the characters in the book.
First Pic of Joe's SCARLETT Revealed - Apr 17, 2008 - 11:23am
I hadn't posted any comments in the last few days... so I thought I better try to figure this new format out.
Anyways... Scarlet is hot. That's all that matters. Someone had told me that the Rachel Nichols in question was the reporter from ESPN... and I was skeptical, but believed them! Ha! Well, at least now I know what good looking lady is in the movie now.
Pirates Scribes Penning LONE RANGER - Mar 28, 2008 - 06:09am
So Alpine... you see "guys who made the Pirates trilogy" and it makes you think ultra-realistic Western????
I liked the Pirates movies and I think this will be a good movie worth watching, but I'd expect it to have its fair share of campiness.
Julie Benz Toplines SAW V - Mar 26, 2008 - 06:23am
For a second there I read "Julie Benz TOPLESS Saw V"... I was really excited. Oh well.
Yelchin Playing Reese in TERMINATOR - Mar 19, 2008 - 05:00am
UberGeek... I thought the same thing. They could even have a small cameo by Brian Austin Green (he wasn't completely terrible in the role).
SUPERMAN Sequel Begins Script Phase - Mar 12, 2008 - 05:56am
Whether you liked SR or not (I liked it), the one scene that everyone seems to approve of was bringing the plane down in the middle of the baseball game. More action can't go wrong.
I am nervous about what villian could make this a worthwhile story. Other than Luthor, the only villain the public at large knows is Zod... but if Singer goes that route, the "rehash" crowd will have even more ammo.
Superman on film has always been fairly grounded on Earth. I don't think that any sort of intergalactic trips to other worlds would be a good idea.
Affleck Ready to Adapt BLADE ITSELF - Mar 11, 2008 - 04:58am
I read the title of this and thought it was referring to the Joe Abercrombie book that came out last year. Guess not.
Ponyboy... every time I hear Affleck's name, all I can think of is "Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms yo!"
Hasbro's New Transformers for 2008 - Mar 04, 2008 - 01:15pm
Sonyman... your schtick is getting old and was never particularly amusing. Seriously, you embarass yourself every time you post. Do yourself and everyone else a favor and lose your login password for this site.
SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES: The Demon Hand - Feb 27, 2008 - 05:40am
I feel that overall, the show has really improved from its debut. When I saw that next week will be the season finale, I was honestly disappointed. I'm hoping that this show had enough "oomph" to get renewed next season.
Strike Victims - Feb 18, 2008 - 06:17am
While its not necessarily a "casualty" of the strike... the worst thing I saw come out of this was 24 being delayed by an entire year. Honestly, they had 6-7 episodes in the can already! How far behind can they really be??????
As to Knight Rider, I enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting Emmy Award winning material and that's not what they tried to be. Its a show about an indestructible, talking car! I was surprised by The Hoff at the end there; I thought I had read an article saying that he would NOT be in the movie. In fact, I was so sure that he wasn't in there that I thought it was a cheap move at the funeral when they went to commercial that they had a Hoff look-a-like seen at a distance in sunglasses. The set-up for the series seemed to wrap up the romantic tension between the leads a little too easily I think. It would appear that the show could be more international than just the SouthWest United States of the original.
JUMPER Teleports Into First Place - Feb 18, 2008 - 05:32am
Sitting on my couch a couple weeks ago I got a sincere case of embarassment for the poor actors I saw in the trailer for Step Up 2 the Streets. Now I feel even worse for them... knowing that many people saw you being an idiot must be a painful realization.
The Show Must Go On - Feb 18, 2008 - 04:55am
Most of the complaints surrounding Goodkind have to do with two things: 1) His books are a thinly veiled manifesto on Ayn Rand's Objectivist philosophy. 2) The man is an arrogant prick. For proof on the first point, just read his books. For proof on the second, look at his answer as to why he doesn't have more maps in his books. Basically, he says that maps are a "fantasy convention" and that he does not write "fantasy." He says that authors like John Grisham don't have to include maps for the reader to understand how the main character got to the coffee shop... so why should he have to? News Flash Tairy... Grishams characters aren't war wizards with fancy swords fighting against a great evil horde from the south!
That said, when Confessor comes out on paperback, I'll finish up the series just to see how it ends. I will admit that I never felt like his overall story was getting away from him and spiraling out of control like I did with Jordan towards the end.
Oh... and here's my obligatory Martin comment... I'm happy the man is getting newfound attention for all of his decades old work, but lets not forget WHY you're getting all that attention, its a little series called ICE AND FIRE that the readers are getting very antsy for! I want my Dance with Dragons!!!
No Dinobots in TRANSFORMERS 2 - Feb 13, 2008 - 01:53pm
I saw the commercial for Knight Rider while my wife was watching Extra on NBC last night (I think that's what it was... can't remember anything else that would have been on) and was pleasantly surprised at how excited I felt about it.
Watch out though... the whole damn thing is just gonna be a commercial for Ford. It'll ruin it. And how dare they change it from a Trans-AM!!!!!!!!!
No Dinobots in TRANSFORMERS 2 - Feb 13, 2008 - 12:57pm
I just wanna hear someone say "Bah weep grah nah weep ninny bob."
And as an additional aside... why all the product placement hate? 1) Its a fact of life in every movie. 2) The old cartoons were just half hour commercials for the toys.
Sarah Connor Chronicles: Queen's Gambit - Feb 13, 2008 - 04:52am
I still think this show is getting gradually better every week. At first I was watching it out of morbid curiousity/nothing else on... now I actually plan to sit down and watch on Monday nights.
New Teaser Poster for Bond's SOLACE - Feb 08, 2008 - 05:02am
"Dump winehouse for somebody else. Daughtry would be cool."
But probably too reminescent of Chris Cornell doing the song for Casino Royale.
Arnett Replaced by Val Kilmer for K.I.T.T - Feb 07, 2008 - 06:43am
I want to hear KITT say "I'm your huckleberry!" or "You! You're still dangerous... but you can be my wingman any time!"
SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES: Heavy Metal - Feb 06, 2008 - 05:07am
I thought it was a fairly good episode. The series seems to be getting generally stronger and I like that.
CONAN Still on Hold? - Jan 30, 2008 - 10:50am
Obligatory "Awww helllll naw" comment.
CONAN Still on Hold? - Jan 30, 2008 - 06:48am
"some better acting chops than The Rock to do Conan justice"
You mean like Ahnollld circa 1982?
My concern with any Conan project that professes to stay closer to the subject matter is that to the vast majority of the American public, Conan is Arnold and the way Arnold portrayed him is the "correct" version. I would fear that any deviation could have major backlash.
Jimmy Bennett is Young Kirk in STAR TREK - Jan 30, 2008 - 05:15am
"But I'll do you one better: the Romulans try to kill kirk when he's a kid, or before he's born... or they try several times."
Terminator: The James T. Kirk Chronicles
Redshirt... Not a bad idea, but somehow I don't give these producers enough credit to track down an obscure reference like that.
Ryan Gosling as JACK RYAN? - Jan 25, 2008 - 10:40am
"But it's set during Vietnam and there would be a real problem there. Keep it in the original timeframe and you probably lose relavency for today's audience, transpose it to say the Gulf War or Iraq, and you have to essentially rewrite huge sections and one of the main plotlines to accomodate."
I don't know. It might not be necessary for Kelly to swim to the site if you set it in Iraq like he did in Without Remorse, but I'd say the "coming out of retirement for one more mission" could be done even in the Iraq/Afghanistan setting. Planning and being the man on the ground for a strike against a terrorist stronghold where prisoners are being held could be just as legit as destroying a Vietcom POW camp. Additionally, the idealistic spy getting wrapped up into bigger stuff side-story could continue (complete with facing Mr. Clark's justice). I think it could very easily be adapted to today's setting. War, government conspiracies, drug dealers, and revenge are all pretty timeless conepts.
Personally, I think it could be great if you just leave it as Vietnam era though. I just loved the whole concept of his "urban camoflauge" and stalking his prey. It was a really great read back when I was in high school and I've read it a couple times since.
Ryan Gosling as JACK RYAN? - Jan 25, 2008 - 08:08am
"Rainbow Six was a novel long before it was a video game"
Actually... I'm pretty sure they were developed in conjunction. Part of the Red Storm entertainment brand or some such. The book and first game were both released in '98. I think the book did beat the game to the shelves by a couple months though.
Ryan Gosling as JACK RYAN? - Jan 25, 2008 - 05:03am
I don't get it.
In my mind there is no Jack Ryan in Hollywood. All three actors have portrayed him entirely different and there is nothing that ties those movies together. Since the "Ryanverse" has never really caught on in Hollywood, why the desire to make a new story with Jack Ryan as the character? Its certainly not to "build" off of established cannon. Couldn't it just as easily be Joe Smith as the main character? Unless all they seek is a cheap tie in.
While we're throwing Clancy books out there as film ideas, yes Rainbow Six is a movie that is long overdue. Another book that I think could and should be done is Without Remorse. The John Clark character has been butchered in his two appearances on screen. I like both Willem Dafoe and Liev Schrieber, but neither meet up with the sheer level of bad-assery that is Mr. C.
I thought Clancy had a potential start of something good with Teeth of the Tiger, but he has apparently decided not to continue it. If he needs more source material, I would think there are plenty of stories he could write with John Clark's past.
The Sarah Connor Chronicles: The Turk - Jan 24, 2008 - 12:26pm
I think I kinda like the angle with the FBI agent. I find it interesting that in the first episode, he clearly thought that Sarah was looney for all her talk of time traveling cyborgs and now every episode he keeps getting confronted with more and more evidence that she may be right. I am eager to see how they handle this plot point.
The Side Project - Jan 21, 2008 - 08:17am
So true... who can forget everyone's favorite crippled 8 year old!
The Side Project - Jan 21, 2008 - 04:20am
The first three books of ASoIaF is some of the best fantasy in print today. It became obvious that GRRM started struggling with his story when he left his original outline to scrap his original intended "5 year gap." I know that he repeatedly says he hasn't lost focus or interest on his "Not a Blog" but the facts state otherwise. I'm sure Wild Cards and all these various other things are truly fascinating... but all I wanna see is Jon, Dany, and Tyrion!
Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight - Jan 18, 2008 - 10:34am
While I obviously havn't seen the DVD... its even more apparent that the reviewer hasn't read the book.
Also, I'd echo the sentiments of TK421. Chronicles is a very "easy reading" kind of fantasy. It doesn't put itself out there as anything other than just a D&D game put out on paper. No overly elaborate languages and geo-political overtones. A simple story of good vs. evil.
I also wasn't a big fan of the War of Souls. Didn't like the wild magic, but I did like Jean Rabe's concept with the Dragon Overlords and really thought something different could have been done there. Not entirely sure how I feel about the direction they're taking Mina in this new trilogy of hers either.
I'll probably pick up this DVD just to do my part to ensure that the rest of chronicles gets made. Keifer Sutherland doing Raistlin just seems like a match made in heaven. I can just picture his raspy voice whispering from the corners.
Christopher Nolan Talks DARK KNIGHT - Jan 15, 2008 - 01:37pm
"he's got no story arc"
This worries me somewhat... but I think I understand what he's getting at.
HD-DVD Backers Switching to Blu-Ray? - Jan 10, 2008 - 05:28am
"Merin, are you serious? 2010? That's way too soon. Unless the next format is a Holodeck, most people who just bought a Bluray player in the past few years is going to upgrade again in 2010. "
You think so? Remember. DVD has been king of the hill for less than 7 years so far. VHS reigned for nearly 20. I would argue that its too soon for a new format as it is.
Let Uncle Sam Buy Your Digital TV - Jan 07, 2008 - 04:49am
The current HD-DVD/Blu-Ray format stinks of Laserdisc with better support.
VHS ruled as king from the early 80's until about 2001. Nearly 20 years. And we're supposed to accept a new format just 7 years later??? No thanks.
New K.I.T.T Car Polished & Ready to Roll - Dec 13, 2007 - 01:40pm
Irascable and Dazzler both asked about the red senser. I came across this pic just a bit ago:
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p131/jim_mayniam/kitt2008.jpg
You can definitely see the red sensor there.
Producers Talk TERMINATOR SALVATION - Dec 05, 2007 - 10:32am
They could end one of the first two movies with the raid on the facility where all the terminators and such get sent back in time.
INCREDIBLE HULK & IRON MAN Linked? - Dec 05, 2007 - 07:59am
While I am skeptical about any major "team up" movies (a la Avengers or Justice League)... I must admit that this way of doing it would be much more likely to succeed than the steaming pile of dog doo that is getting ready to get dropped under the Justice League tag.
Give each of the major participants an origin story movie of their own with subtle hints of a tie-in and then bring them together for a slam bang action fest. Could actually work.
Producers Talk TERMINATOR SALVATION - Dec 05, 2007 - 07:55am
Dazzler, I would think it would all depend on shooting schedules.
Bale has put out at least two movies that I can think of since BB. (Prestige, 3:10 to Yuma) So I would think that fitting in Terminator movies around one or two more Batman movies would be doable.
I do think this movie could be pretty amazing if done right. It basically gives us what we've been wanting from the Terminator and Matrix franchises for years.
Daniel Craig Updates on BOND 22 - Nov 26, 2007 - 08:18am
Dazzler wants a good theme song and gadgets... I liked the "You know my name" theme.
As to fancy gadgets, I think people forget that Bond's first real "gadget" didn't show up until From Russia With Love and it was a briefcase with a pop out dagger, hidden currency, and an exploding deodorant cylinder. (Complete with explanation by Q branch.)
Greenwood Talks CAPTAIN PIKE Role - Nov 15, 2007 - 04:43pm
I'm okay with redesigning the ship as long as they still drive it with humongous knobs, buttons, and levers. Oh... and the Viewmaster doubling as a science station! I want to see Sylar spend half the show hunched over that thing!
Greenwood Talks CAPTAIN PIKE Role - Nov 15, 2007 - 10:49am
(To be on the safe side... I think I should point out that I loved the Firefly show and was not complaining about the look of Serenity. I was making a comment that the ship should look recognizably like it is from the Star Trek universe.)
Greenwood Talks CAPTAIN PIKE Role - Nov 15, 2007 - 10:47am
I'd say the degree of complaining over the look of the 1701 will depend largely on just HOW different it looks.
As long as it has a saucer, the engineering seciton, and the two engine nacelles in some sort of recognizable formation... I'm pretty sure it'll be accepted. If it comes out looking like Serenity... then I think there will be complaints.
Reilly as Lead Vampire in FREAK - Nov 15, 2007 - 10:31am
I love this guy. One of my favorite movie exchanges of all times is in Boogie Nights where he says "You ever see that movie Star Wars? ... People tell me I look like Han Solo."
I'm under the assumption this is a comedy.
BRUCE WAYNE Getting Shelved? - Nov 07, 2007 - 07:15am
Will the new Batman be a brainwashed psychopath who puts razor blades on the batsuit and flaming blades from his fists?
Hrmm... that sounds so familiar... why is that???
DARK KNIGHT Avoids Hong Kong Harbor - Nov 05, 2007 - 02:08pm
I don't understand why this would change the set up of the movie... seems like an alternate filming location would be perfectly acceptable.
WB Grabs Berlanti to Helm GREEN LANTERN - Oct 29, 2007 - 06:41am
Not sure how the Green Lantern thread turned into a Wedding Crashers critique... but I was of the opinion that the movie lost all of my interest when it moved to that crazy island. It didn't pick back up again until Will Ferral showed up to save the day.
Back on topic... This is another movie announcement that just makes me go "WTF???" Is this seriously the same minds behind Batman Begins? Everything that is said about JLA, WW, Flash, and the new Superman really just seems like someone said "Okay, we really need to ruin every comic book property we have. How can we do that in the most efficient way possible?"
Where’s My Dance with Dragons? - Oct 29, 2007 - 06:36am
I know that the popular trend is to go with the epic multi-volume series in lieu of the trilogy... but if you look at a couple of the biggest examples of this format (WoT, ASoIaF) you'll see that the author starts with a dizzying pace of production, and then tapers out. What you end up getting is the first few novels come out at a year/year and a half pace and then eventually get to the 3 years between books of Jordan or the 5 years of Martin. IMO, publishers really need to re-think the contracts they are giving these authors.
I'm a big fan of Mr. Martin's work and would never dream of going to his blog and attacking him the way that some seem to, but I must admit... I do wonder if he hasn't lost his passion for his work. When a book the size of Storm comes out in a year, and then ADWD takes 7 years and counting (remember... that's the book he started working on after Storm, Feast was born of necessity) I have to wonder if something isn't wrong.
Director Pegged for THE FLASH Spin-off - Oct 28, 2007 - 10:45am
The Superman and the Batman franchises aren't going to tie into JLA... why bother with a spin-off for Flash?
He may not be as big as Supes or Bats, but he still is noteable enough with the average moviegoer that he could carry his own movie. (Much moreso than Ironman, Daredevil, or Elektra among others.)
Teresa Palmer Lands WONDER WOMAN Role? - Oct 26, 2007 - 12:14pm
Genre Killer. Like I said yesterday. This is the sort of movie that will put a halt to all comic book movies for 10 years.
GI JOE Begins Casting For Feb Start - Oct 26, 2007 - 07:22am
Shogunn... what makes you think Wahlberg as Duke leads to a cartoon angle?
I thought he did well in a military roll in Three Kings. (Also liked him in Boogie Nights... but that's a step in the comedy direction.)
Doug Jones Updates on SILVER SURVER - Oct 26, 2007 - 07:13am
I think Flat was asking who he was and what is his association with the character currently...
I would assume he did the motion capture for the character?
Rupert Evans is the New SUPERMAN? - Oct 24, 2007 - 06:10am
Random rumors about casting aside... I still think this is one giant recipe for disaster. Until I learn otherwise, I see this as a genre killer much like Batman and Robin was a genre killer. Everything I've heard about this movie just screams "You'll stop making superhero movies for 10 years just because this one is so bad!"
Raimi Updates SPIDER-MAN 4 & SHADOW - Oct 17, 2007 - 08:28am
Good concept... just seems like a lot to fit into one movie.
I agree that Kraven vs Lizard vs Spidey would be a good angle. Gwen as the third wheel just seemed like it was pretty much wrapped up in Spidey 3. Dunno.
Lots of possibilities out there.
Kiefer Gets 48, Rodriguez Gets 6 Months - Oct 16, 2007 - 02:57pm
""Kiefer made clear to us at the time of his arrest that his first concern was the welfare of those he worked with"
Well thank God he's concerned about his co-workers! I wonder if any of them were on the road that night...
And yes, I think that just about anyone who has ever drank alcohol has probably been behind the wheel at a time when they shouldn't have. And I think we all recognize that it was stupid, dangerous, and not something to be repeated in the future. I love Keifer's work... I just hope he gets everything straightened out in his life.
The BIONIC COMMANDO Returns - Oct 16, 2007 - 01:18pm
I actually kinda liked the revamped Spy Hunter a couple years ago...
Bionic Commando was a blast back in the day. The last boss was so hard, I remember I had a tips and tricks book (yes kiddos... before the advent of websites like gamefaqs, you had to buy a book) that said the game was unbeatable. The second edition of that book basically said "Ooops. We goofed."
Cullen Confirms TRANSFORMERS Trilogy - Oct 13, 2007 - 10:28am
Personally. I loved it.
I wasn't expecting "The English Patient" out of the deal. I wanted transforming robots who blew stuff up... and I got it. I could have done without the guy from Oh Brother Where Art Thou, but all in all... great flick.
THUNDERCATS Grabs a Director - Oct 10, 2007 - 09:27am
Dazzler... I'm turning 30 in less than 6 months. Thundercats were huge when I was in 2nd and 3rd grade. To my knowledge there has been no real effort to keep them at "top of mind awareness" like the various incarnations of the Transformers. To start from the end of the series would pretty much eliminate a huge audience that was never introduced to the show.
I wonder if they'll get a lot of the old voice actors to come back for the movie.
NBC Orders ROBINSON CRUSOE Series - Oct 01, 2007 - 07:00am
"including a MacGyver-like knack of the lead character for making handy tools and devices out of common items"
I once saw the Professor on Gilligan's Island make a radio out of two coconuts...
