One has to wonder how director Joe Carnahan feels about being snubbed twice by J.J Abrams. First, he had the directing gig set for MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III only to lose the gig, something Abrams eventually was awarded from Paramount. Now, he has his lost the lead actor attached to his upcoming WHITE JAZZ film and why did he lose him? Because Chris Pine has opted out of the project and selected J.J Abrams' STAR TREK film instead, a project set to film at the same time as Carnahan's film. Joe has updated his blog letting the media know that Pine will indeed be suiting up as Captain Kirk in the next installment.

With this casting announcement, the cast is almost entirely set for JJ Abrams and producers Bryan Burk and Lindelof. Here's the official cast for the next film:

Chris Pine-Young Kirk

Zachary Quinto-Young Spock

Leonard Nimoy- Old Spock

Eric Bana-Nero

Simon Pegg-Young Scotty

Anton Yelchin-Young Chekov

Zoe Saldana-Young Uhura

John Cho-Young Sulu

Note to our readers: The rumor is still going strong on sites such as Trekmovie that Karl Urban will be playing "Young Bones" but this has yet to be confirmed by JJ Abrams, Paramount or any press release from Variety or Hollywood Reporter. Until it is confirmed, we have 3 major characters involved that need to be cast. Bones and Kirk's parents which will be involved in the film according to studio sources. Production will begin in November and last through March of 2008.

STAR TREK hits theaters Christmas Day 2008.

This is a much better picture than the one they are featuring on Ain't It Cool News.com--Thanks to this photo, I can see why they picked this guy to play Kirk, and I wish him good luck---but...the only thing that had me interested in this movie was the possibility of the Matt Damon casting as Kirk...a move that would have given this film much needed credibility.

Now, I just don't care!!!

nah.. matt Damon or William Shatner can Play Kirk's father and Kirstie Alley can Play his mother.

I think it would be REALLY funny if Shatner played Kirks father in this flick!!!!

Gee, I wonder why Pine ditched Carnahan? Could it be he realized "Smokin' Aces" sucked to high Heaven?

I wonder if he yells this as good as Shatner:
KAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHNNNNNNNN!!!

Is William Shatner in this movie or not? Because he isn't in the cast list at the top and I haven't heard any mention of him being in the movie.

This seems like it is shaping up to be a good cast....Since they are kind of going back to the beginning, like Casino Royale, I hope it is equally as good. I still think Zachary Quinto is like the best choice ever for young spock.

TheWatcher, Shatner has stated publicly at least a couple of times that he is NOT in the movie.

Nice casting. With "not so hyped" actors, we can expect more twists in not just the movie, but in the actors themselves. Can't wait. I'm crossing my fingers on this one.

I think this movie is going to be cool and it will give Star Trek what is so desperately needs: Change. People are hard on Trek because it's product has sucked since Star Trek: First Contact. Rick Berman handled the franchise all wrong. A reboot or retcon whatever this is makes sense. I always knew that one day as the actors on the original series got older that they would have to grab younger actors. There is a ton of fresh material from the original series era that was never fully explored. There are a lot of gaps in that history. Fanboys need to chill and give the movie a shot. Maybe not casting a major named star was a good thing. There is this propensity to dog out Trek because it has been poorly written with the exception of Manny Coto's writing on Season 4 of Enterprise. Generations, Insurrection, and Nemisis Sucked so badly. I cant stand Voyager especially the Neelix character. At least Quark was a criminal this clown cooked cabbage and sang songs. Nobody wants that in their star trek. I hope they wipe Voyager from continuity. It began the decline of that franchise. They didn't tap into the potential of the material they had.I mean to make a movie about a damn briar patch when a major war is in erupting in the Star Trek universe and Enterprise was not even involved. That is crazy. I Star Trek's 2,4,6, and 8. That is it. I like that latter season of NG and DS9 is my all time favorite. I think that this movie needs to be given a chance and I am glad they have kept it under wraps. Star Trek has been getting compromised by spoilers and haters. I think this retcon will be good. I hated the way they killed Kirk in Generations. He deserved much better than that. I say give the movie a chance and stop judgining by Trek's past. Hey if this is a reboot a la DC universe crisis on infinite earths then cool. They need one.
I mean with all that time travel I would think the time line has to be messed up in some way. I think it's going to be a decent movie. The cast will be at the next comic con to answer all fanboy questions. Zoe Saldana is so fine as Uhura. So sexy.

loved the original cast movies (tho as stated, the even movies were the best). It was the chemistry of the characters that made the original cast work. I really never saw that in ANY of the following casts. There was indeed a little in TNG, but I still didn't find it all that entertaining. DS9 was about as boring as it got for me. Voyager had potential but was written horribly. Enterprise...had its moments.

I do think this movie MAY be a good idea...I think going with mostly unknowns is a MAJOR positive for this movie. I think Matt Damon would have been a HORRIBLE Kirk and compromised the integrity of this film, not help it. Time will tell if this movie is good or not. Abrams does tend to make good product, he just sucks at keeping them going after a couple of years.
