Clannad DVD Upgrade Program Detailed

Want the dub? Got the subs? Here's the details.

When Sentai Filmworks announced that a dub was in the works (or completed actually), they would offer an upgrade program for the fans who supported the subtitle version release from last year. They've followed through with that and information has been posted at the Right Stuf retail site which is really quite reasonable considering most people got it with discounts that helps to balance it all out pretty well:

Section23 has revealed the details of their CLANNAD upgrade program. There are two ways to participate and receive a discounted price on the CLANNAD Complete Collection, which includes episodes 1-24 and features a new English dub, in addition to the Japanese audio and subtitles.
1. Redeem the completed upgrade form, the sub-only Clannad Collections 1 and 2 (SFCL100 and SFCL200) -- all four DVDs, sleeve art and plastic cases -- plus $20 for the upgrade and postage [$3 postage within the USA / $6 for Canada].
2. Or if you purchased only one of the sub-only sets -- Clannad Collection 1 (SFCL100) or Clannad Collection 2 (SFCL200) -- redeem the completed upgrade form, plus the two DVDs, sleeve art and plastic case and $35 for the upgrade, plus postage [$3 postage within the USA / $6 for Canada].

Doesn't seem like much of a discount to me. : /

Especially considering that Right Stuf's normal price for the set is $52.49 (less than $30 more than the upgrade program), and Right Stuf always has studio sales which will end up making the asking price for the new complete collection right about the same as the upgrade program. Frankly, you're better off just keeping your existing Clannad DVDs, and just waiting for Right Stuf's next studio sale.

And I just checked RACS, and they have it for only $48.98. Considering that the upgrade program costs you $23 (not including your shipping costs to send your existing copies over to Right Stuf), this program just doesn't seem like a good deal at all...

@ Metr0id: It's better deal than double dipping.

Concerning the studio sales METR0ID cites, the discounts are always rooted in MSRP, not RSi's everyday sale price. Assuming they go 40% off, which seems to be the norm with their sales, $42 is the likely price with a Sentai studio sale, whenever that happens. So, basically, $20 to upgrade, $42 if you wait to double dip, $53 if you double dip without waiting.

Yeah, you pay $3 in shipping, but you pay that with any standalone order, so it's pointless to focus on that. It's a great deal as far as I'm concerned, especially considering, as the article correctly points out, no one bought the sub-only Clannad disks at retail price anyway. I personally paid $30 each and I preordered each and every one of the four collections. $20 for the dub ($10 a collection) seems pretty reasonable to me considering they're adding a dub.

@ joelgundam01

I never said it wasn't a better deal than double dipping. It's just not a very good deal in my opinion. Considering the alternative isn't much more expensive. It's "a deal", but not a good one. Especially when you factor in the hassle of sending your old copies, and paying for the shipping costs to do so. And adding the $3 for shipping the new copies is fair, because plenty of places offer free shipping (as well as the option to buy at retail stores like Best Buy). You're looking at about $30 for the upgrade program with shipping costs included, and about $42 with a studio sale purchase. A difference of barely $12 or $13. Not much of a deal if you ask me.

People would be bitching if they didn't do a trade in deal.
