When it comes to the truly unique composers working in the Hollywood system, Cliff Martinez can be counted on the short list with such experimental wunderkinds as Thomas Newman and Philip Glass. All have a fascination with long pads of hypnotic rhythms, percussion and ethnic beats. During a career spent as the musical component of director Steven Soderbergh's more existential films, Martinez's musical voice has rarely risen above a mesmerizing low tone in such scores as TRAFFIC,THE UNDERNEATH and KAFKA. But now his first full-on orchestral score for SOLARIS and NARC's grittily propulsive music have taken this soft-spoken composer into another sonic dimension.
