Clip from DIARY OF THE DEAD Online

The first clip for Diary of the Dead has popped up online courtesy of Shock Til You Drop. Judging from the clip, director George A. Romero is showing field reporters how to be at the wrong place at the wrong time for a good scoop. This next installment in the "Dead" series was shot more in an indie style which Romero knows so well from his first three dead films. Diary stars Shawn Roberts, Megan Park, Joshua Close, Michelle Morgan, Chris Violette  and Tatiana Maslany.

Plot Summary: Fiction turns into reality for a group of film students who set out to shoot a low-budget horror flick in the woods of Pennsylvania. When the dead come to life before their eyes, director Jason Creed decides to capture these startling events with his camera, even as members of his cast and crew become prey to the increasing army of walking corpses that surround them. Mainstream media coverage of this plague is manipulated and unreliable, so the only way to get the real story out to the public is by posting raw footage on the Internet. As the group make their way back home in an old Winnebago, they are met with death at every turn, and the realization sets in that the only remaining audience for Jason's film may be the same undead subjects he is risking his life to document.

The film hits theaters Feb 15, 2008.

I love the genre... but was skeptical about a return to the oldschool Romero zombie, especially after Land... but that is a pretty sweet clip.

I saw Land in a dilapidated run-down dollar theatre 3 times.

And the fact that the theatre was run down and dilapidated augmented the film experience and atmosphere for me quite nicely. Thank you very much.

I would not use the term "enjoyable" to describe my viewing of Land of the Dead; it's more that I found the dilapidated theater house, bad lighting and slowly sickening-feeling I had while watching the movie, not entirely inappropriate for a certain type of horror movie.

It certainly made the experience disturbing and memorable.

Ultimately I thought, critical-analysis aside, viewing the evolution of Romero's social-commentary and message was worth the price I paid to see Land.

Yes, I'm one of "those" that really enjoys that part of Romero films as much as I do the kick-ass Zombie aspect.

..even if watching me trying to "enjoy" Land, was probably not unlike that scene in Austin Powers, you know the one, where he puts a CD on a record player and tries valiantly to like the scratched silicon shit that comes out.

That was basically me while watching Land for the first time.

By the end of the 3rd time, I just couldn't find an "in" to like it as "cinema" or "a movie" but I loved the social commentary.

I love that you can dress up as the undead and party your ass off at a Romero film with your mates and then after when the party's over and you're hung over and the sun is coming up, you can then have an early-mornin serious discussion with your clown posse about whatever issues and themes Romero injected.

Finally, I don't think I've ever left a Romero Zombie film without feeling sick and disturbed (an experience which he enjoys - Ed) Yes I do, and I don't expect it'll be any different this time.

if that 30 seconds is any indication Diary looks like a cinema verite Zombiemania flick.

(..that leaves you feeling slightly sick afterwards - Ed)

With any luck, hell yeah.

Bring it on.

I thought Land of the Dead was awful. A zombie leader giving commands and so on detracted from everything that I've come to love about zombies. Hopefully he's going back to the original way they were portrayed.
And after reading the plot summary I'm wondering if he's going to use a first person perspective (shaky cam) for parts of the film.

Romero's going back to the original way the Zombies were portrayed + using a hand-cam along with other cams.

Diary's full title should probably read:

"21st Century video diary of the dead"

It seems to be constructed along the lines of: imagine if the original Night of the Living Dead Zombie outbreak took place in today's (consumer electronics inundated monitored + gadgeted) post-modern camera-in-every-orifice world.

Would Zombie footage show up on Youtube? and warnings surface on blogs? and if they did, would anyone believe it? who do we trust?

I can guess some of the answers to those questions might be.

1. We'd trust the government just slightly less than Mephistopheles, who would be less inclined to answer every inquiry with "it's a weather balloon"

2. nobody would notice what AICN's Harry said because it'd be buried by 400 exclamation marks.

Plus we'd all suspect "Zombie's are coming!!!" "Zombie's are at my door!!!!" "Zombies are eating me and I still hate Uwe Boll more than them!!!!!!" you know, was all part of a marketing gimmick that he was involved with anyway.

3. Dark Jedi would release an impressive number of Zombie statistics that would ultimately further be used to prove that those bastards didn't know what the fuck they were doing when they released Grindhouse.

(and he'd be right - Ed)

My expectations are low to middling after Land, but it does sound like Diary has good potential to be something that Land wasn't, and that's "fun" and uh..biting.

Always ready for a zombie movie. There is no such thing as a bad zombie movie, just the case of some are better than others. You guys who think the genre should end, and wonder why they keep making zombie moves, well I'm part of the reason they keep makin them. I love them all and Romero is the Godfather of zombies. I'll see this one, FO'SHO!

LOVE me the zombie flicks and Romero is obviously the king here. This one looks like it’ll be good and it’s got me all giddy! I like your thoughts on what we might be expecting MXM and hope they pan out.
There are A LOT of crap zombie flicks out there. Some are enjoyable because they are so bad. Some, not so much. Romero, however, hasn’t let me down yet. As I get older I truly enjoy the social commentary running through his ‘series’ more and more as mentioned above. In my younger days it was more about the flesh eating.
Gotta defend Land from all the hating and quasi-hating. I thought it was a fine & logical entry. Not the best of the bunch but still better than a lot of the Z flicks out there (Looking at you, 28 Weeks Later). The Best of Romero for me would be Dawn followed very closely by Day. Was Land fun? It had it’s moments but I thought the darker tone (if such a term applies here) was befitting. The zombie commander? People be hating big time on that but for me it was
A) Logical progression. Night showed they could use tools, Dawn showed they had memory & Day showed they could learn. Organize was the next step & I welcomed it
B) The whole idea of them organizing is the most horrifying thing in this particular Zombie Universe for me. Are they as soulless as we thought? Am I really killing a shell of a person or am I actually killing mommy? Horrible things to consider.
I understand the appeal of the non-thinking killing machine. There are plenty of other zombie flicks out there for that though. In this world, though, they might not be as ‘dead’ as one would hope. I like that. Onscreen of course.

Save the last bullet for me,
Baloney

Xavier-- Actually it'd be a good marketing ploy to post "zombie" home vids on YouTube just before the movie opens up.
