British journalist Jon Ronson's book Men Who Stare at Goats has been picked up by Winchester, BBC Films and Mandate Pictures with George Clooney set to star. The book is a mixture of paranormal and military, with it being based on the U.S. Army's First Earth Battalion, a unit that was to use paranormal powers. Clooney's  Smoke House partner Grant Heslov will direct the feature film.

If you're curious what the title refers to, it's based on the notion that one can kill a goat by staring at it.

Script was penned by Brit Peter Straughan ("How to Lose Friends and Alienate People"). The project has been around for some time, but international buyers only just received the script this week as the Cannes fest and market got started. Script topped the 2007 Brit List of best unproduced screenplays.

George Clooney's next film to hit theaters is Joel and Ethan Coen's Burn After Reading, a dark-spy comedy which stars the actor
, two-time Academy Award nominee John Malkovich, Academy Award winner Frances McDormand, Academy Award nominee Brad Pitt, and Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton. That one hits theaters Friday, Sept 12.

Sweet! Brad Pitt and George work well together and apart. Although, Ocean's 12 and on sucked. And the Coen Brothers rule as directors; can't go wrong with BAR.

The movie the story is about sounds equally intriuging(?...doesn't look spelt right). I wonder if it's going to be futuristic, set in space, or what? First Earth Battalion implies that there's going to be another Earth, no? We'll see.

Does sound intriguing (just had the "i" and the "u" switched). I was wondering the same thing about the setting. According to Wiki, the idea of the First Earth Battalion was proposed in the 70s, but it was never formed. The guy who wrote the book spent time with the people behind it. Sounds freaky, but could be interesting. I'll see most anything with Clooney. He's the man.

I've skimmed this book and seen pieces of a british documentary based on it. It's not futuristic but deals with some of the modern top secret techniques that are currently under study by the U.S. government in developing the power of the mind and body for covert and combat use. It's similar to the Remote Viewing that the Pentagon was into for a time.
The goat killing refers to a martial arts master named Guy Savelli who said he had techniques for killing people with mind power like a Jedi that he was teaching to the CIA. Goats were used for testing because at that particular military base they were used for emergency training for medics by tossing grenades at them. Bizarre and interesting uses of your tax dollars.
I assume Clooney will deal with it in a humorous style he did with Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.
Here's that documentary:

Hate, hate George Clooney, but Burn After Reading I will see . The Cohens brother can't go wrong and that cast is incredible. I bet everyone here took a pay cut just to work with the Cohens. Clooney is smart in being in this type of film since he has proven that he isn't a box office draw.

Thank goodness it's about killing a goat by staring at it. I thought they were staring at the goats so they wouldn't bother them while they were with the sheep.

Maybe this will be good after all.
