Cobie Smulders Joins SHIELD In Marvel's The Avengers

Nine picture deal keeps her options very open

With shooting getting ever closer to starting in May, it looks like the final negotiations are underway for who will be playing a SHIELD agent alongside Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury in quite a few Marvel films coming up. Cobie Smulders (who we adore in How I Met Your Mother) essentially has a lock on the still unnamed SHIELD agent which will make their first appearance in the Avengers film. Similar to the deal that Jackson has with Marvel Studios, it will be a nine-picture deal that has her in a supporting role for the character. Smulders would be joining Jackson alongside Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) in the Joss Whedon directed big picture that's set for a May 4, 2012 release.

Excellent!  Cobie rocks!  Too bad she didn't get the gig with Joss Whedon's WW, but this will do nicely.

If that guy from The New Adventures of Old Christine can play a solid SHIELD agent, then Cobie will knock it out of the park!

This is great she is awesome as the toughish tomboy type on her show. She will look good up on the big screen too.

This does makes me wonder if the Old Christine guy, I am not going to pretend to know his name w/o going to IMDB, is going to be getting even less screen time. I hope not, it was kind of cool to see him pop in and out of the IM movies (and soon in Thor).

I was never a big Buffy, or Firefly fan.  That explains my hesitation to Whedon helming this film.  This is a very HUGE project (to say the least).  Even the very best director would find this task daunting.  I'm concerned that it might be beyond Whedon's capabilities.  Also, still disapointed that Ruffalo replaced Norton in this movie.  I hope I am wrong.  I really, really, really do.

Joss Whedon is an absolute genius, but he must have pissed people off to have the bad luck he's had with TV over the last bunch of years.  He took Campy vampire for kids and made an impressive 7 season run out of it,  and an Angel spin-off that lasted 5 seasons!   Both shows were great and are quite watchable today.  For anyone who has never seen either show I can understand the aprehension but they were a successfull blend of sci-fi, horror, action, comedy and some of the best written drama to ever be on television!!  I was very excited to hear he was doing Avengers and I have no doubt that there probably isn't a better person alive to be tackling this project!!  He knows how to do ensemble better than anyone, all you have to do is look at both above mentioned shows or even his failed but brilliant efforts with Firefly and Dollhouse to see that he has a great way of developing multiple characters without seeming like its stretching to make use of everyone.   Putting him at the helm of this film will likely go down as one of the smartest moves in comic to movie history!!

I have no clue who she is (never watched How I Met Your Mother) but I don't care. She's hot....

And yes, Agent Coulson was a huge surprise in the IM movies so this could work too.

I repeat: Smulders is the best part of HIMYM (and I'm a fan of Hannigan and Narrow Pressure Hydrocephalus...) My question is, with Maria Hill now officially introduced, is talk of a SHIELD movie out because there is no point. (If there ever was, mind you...)

I too like Agent Coulson. I think having all the SHIELD agents in Avengers is great but I hope they continue to "spread the love" for the solo movies. You really don't need more than one of them to appear.

Rheul_home 2/8/2011 11:44:06 AM

Ive been watching HIMYM for years and really, really want to see he in a SHIELD uniform...

I would guess she's playing Maria Hill...

wish:  That is where you and I differ.  I don't think Whedon is a genius.  I DID watch Buffy (as much as I could) and I gave Firefly a shot.  I didn't like either show.  I think his work is "campy".  He may be able to juggle a band of characters, but they also came off, to me, as rather flat (not to mention the high cheese factor.)  I know he has a legion of fans, but I just don't care for his work (and, we can can do without the silly humor in this film.)  Plus, he has yet to work with high profile talent like the ones listed in this film.  Like I said, I hope beyond hope that I'm pleasantly surprised.  I don't want to see a movie like the Avengers fail.

I didn't know anything about the character, so I had to look her up.  She sounds rather dubious.
