Some news centering THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE EMPEROR DRAGON has appeared online courtesy of Shock Til You Drop. The director has opened a new blog that will detail the 20-week shooting schedule and leak out movie details himself. Cohen has already passed along some plot devices which will circle the O'Connell family (Changes: with Maria Bello as the mother, not Rachel Weisz. Luke Ford takes over as the son.). The film stars Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, John Hannah, Luke Ford, Maria Bello, Michelle Yeoh & Anthony Wong.

Plot Summary: Jet Li plays a despotic Emperor in 50 B.C. whose evil is punished by a terrible curse laid on him by wizardress Michelle Yeoh: he and his army are turned into to terra cotta for all time; that is, unless he is re-awakened which, of course, is where the O'Connells come back into it.

The story moves to the year 1946. When we find them, Rick (Brendan Fraser) and Evelyn (Maria Bello) are retired to Oxfordshire, England, having been spies for the British during World War II. They are bored silly and welcome the offer of "one last mission" from the Foreign Office. Their assignment: courier a precious artifact back to the museum in Shanghai, China from which it was stolen. China is in turmoil but Jonathan (John Hannah) owns an Egyptian-themed bar in Shanghai. Unbeknownst to his parents, now grown-up Alex O'Connell (Luke Ford) is following in the family business as a young archaeologist on a dig in north-central China.

Here's a bit of those details Cohen has revealed in his new blog...

"Crash landings, treks thru the Himalayas, Yeti, avalanches (bigger than the one I did in "XXX"), Shangri-la, three-headed dragons, pools of eternal life, epic battles, a shape-shifting Jet Li... I could go on but I don't want to give it all away."

Here's his new blog.

THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE EMPEROR TOMB hits theaters August 1, 2008.

This plot sounds like it is treading on some stuff that's being done on Indy 4!!!

metalwater, I'm not going to bitch about negative posts...I agree with your point of view there...but DEAR GOD, I've been going out of my way to AVOID anything about what's going on in Indy IV. Thanks a lot.

If they can avoid the tired crutch of Evil Ancient Egyptian Mummy out to wreak havoc on the witless tomb raiders, then more power to them. Ancient China is an intriguing angle.

While I love Maria Bello, I wish they'd just killed off Evie. I don't think anyone else could do the part justice.

Agreed, Taydor, but they don't have to kill her off to not have her in the movie. I'm not seeing the Indy 4, but lots of stories have been to Shangri-la. I think the story sounds great and I'm getting excited about this now. Who doesn't like a good yeti? Bring it on.

Is it just me or does it sound like they're getting their playbook for this film from the Titan Quest video game? "I guess we milked Egypt to death with three movies; what should we do next? Guys? Guys!?! Get off that computer and help me with the story--" "China." "Cool."

I adore Maria Bello, but I can't see her in Rachel's role. Dohen should have just killed off Evie. I don't expect much from Cohen's movies, but it should at the very least be a fun popcorn movie. I'm glad to see Michelle Yoeh's name attached to this movie; she's great.

A. Long time visitor to Mania/Cinescape (I remember reading updates pre-Fellowship of the Ring on the site). Finally decided to add my .02. B. The Mummy franchise has thrived on being a fun amalgamation of things that had already been done. "If" it does end up being like Indy 4 (something I'm not convinced of yet) then I'm sure it will be done in the vein of an homage like has been done with the other Mummy movies. C. Maybe they took the Ancient China theme from Titan Quest, maybe they didn't. But it seems to me that if they want to move away from the Egyptian/Mesopatamian themes, then China would be the next logical choice, it being one of the oldest cultures in the world.

Bottom line... I had a blast watching the first... Had a blast watching the second... Bring on the third... They are just damn fun...

If I recall the first one came out three weeks before Star Wars Episode I, and everyone went to see Mummy. We kept saying it wasn't original, but it was a warm-up to the pulpy adventure coolness we expected with Phantom Menace. How sadly we were mistaken... The second one infuriated me because they retconned the backstory (had they hinted at that in the first film, I would have been very impressed). I thought the Scorpion King was actually much better than Mummy Returns. I just wonder if Bello can pull of a British accent.
