Director Rob Cohen continues to keep us up to date on The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The man behind the third film in the franchise has once again updated his official website, giving us a hint that we can expect a trailer on the official site within a month. Before giving his update, I should warn you that Cohen gives more spoilerish details as he's been doing in the past on the blog.

Joel, Kelly and I continue with the editing process. The film is running 2 hours and 5 minutes long and strong and we continue to refine it in preparation for our first studio screening February 28th. Here all the Universal execs will get to see it unveiled for the first time. I have taken many of them into my confidence already showing large swaths of the movie to Marc Shmuger, the chairman, Donna Langley, the president of production and Jeff Kirschenbaum the senior v.p. Everyone has been really stoked. Whew!

We should have the teaser trailer out within a month and, hopefully, you will find it as exciting as I have dreamt this year of work to be.

I will talk to Universal about premiering the teaser here on my blog so that you, who have showed so much interest in my film, will get to see it first. I'll let you know what they say.

The visual effects work is going on apace. We have nine finals at this point out of 800 shots. Sounds dismal and hopeless, but this is how vfx work goes: the first 50% of the time on 10% of the shots and the second 50% on the 90%. There is so much R & D going in defining the visual rules for each fantasy creature, object, or landscape (what does Shangri-la look like?) that the refinement of this first 100 shots defines all the rest. Once the aesthetics and methodology are set, the production pipelines are refined and the work begins to accelerate.

So far, the Yeti (the abominable snowmen) done by Rhythm & Hues, that appear in the Himalayan sequence are my favorite achievement. They are flat out cool! Supervisor Derek Spears and team have been kicking ass on the creatures.

Meanwhile, over at Digital Domain, Co-supervisors Joel Hynek and Matthew Butler have been working with me on the terracotta Jet Li and the final battle where Michelle Yeoh's undead square off against Jet's terracotta army. There are 400 vfx shots in the last 25 minutes of the film, the vast majority belonging to DD.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor will hit theaters August 1, 2008.

No Rachel Weiz means I'll be waiting for DVD. Why waste my money in the theatre when the whole time I'll be thrown out of the movie by the fact that it's Maria Bello and not Rachel Weiz. Not that I dislike Maria Bello. But With this franchise and that character, it's Rachel Weiz or nothing for me.

I too hate it that Weiz isn't in it and may be somewhat of a distraction. However, an eye candy movie like this with all the "vfx" shots really should be seen on the big screen, IMHO. Army of the dead vs a terracotta army and some Yeti along the way. Yes, I'll be there and I'm sure the teaser and trailers will convince many that they should be there as well.

oh wow i forgot all about this movie. the first two were fun, not quite indy but okay. this one i won't know what to think till i see a trailer.

What's the deal with the cry babies complaining about one woman not being in this movie? So Weiz is not in it, get over it...To say you are not going to go watch this because she is not in it, is like saying, if they cast a new Actor for superman you will not go watch it, well guess what they did and you went and WATCHED IT!...That's fine with me though, I would rather you not be in the same theater as me so that way my IQ don't drop a few points... LOTRSUXS ...What have you seen about this movie that makes you Yawn? Have you seen a teaser or a trailer that consisted of nothing but walking from one place to another or something? Ya, right, Yawn... besides all the bullsh*t above, I'm really looking forward to this...
LOTRSUXS 2/19/2008 2:37:02 AM
oh..well, let see, the first movie was so laughable, i couldnt enjoy anything about it, second one was just dull and forgetable( and i actually got paid to watch it), and this one is directed by a well known hack (xxx, fast and the furious. stealth anyone?)so yeah,i guess i dont have to see a single frame of this soon to be turd to know how lame its gonna be... hope i answered your question :-D
Whiskeymovie 2/19/2008 4:58:50 AM
A well known hack that has made movies you have watched...remember that,,,plus, you think LOTRSUXS,,,,should anyone care what you say? :D I think Rob Cohen makes hella fun action movies, from Dragon to Stealth, I have enjoyed them all....I see nothing wrong with movies that are made for pure entertainment, like the Mummy movies. If they aren't your cup of tea, right on, but calling them stupid and dumb etc. isn't really doing anyone much good.
LOTRSUXS 2/19/2008 5:06:40 AM
again, movies that i got pay to watch, otherwise, i would have never bother to sit through a rob "HACK" cohen flick....and clearly you care what i think since you dare to answer back to my post. and i have a question, ARE THERE ANY MOVIES OUT THERE THAT AREN"T MADE FOR ENTERTAINMENT?
TayDor 2/19/2008 5:35:59 AM
mlaforcer: How does disagreeing with casting equal lower IQ?
rgtchtiger 2/19/2008 6:36:35 AM
Considering how absolutely godawful The Mummy Regurgitates was, I have zero interest in seeing this. Note to Universal: I strongly suspect there is a higher demand for a trailer for Incredible Hulk than there is for The Mummy 3. I am really surprised that your big gun summer movie has yet to release any official footage/trailer to the general public and you chose not to buy time during the Super Bowl to debut a trailer. I am not a hardcore Hulk fan, but I am worlds more interested in Hulk than Mummy 3.
