Fellow Maniac "Flint" has passed along an interesting tidbit of information from Bloody-Disgusting. Director Rob Cohen has revealed---while talking about his upcoming Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor---that he has grabbed the remake rights to the '80's creature mash-up Monster Squad, which just enjoyed a DVD re-release last year. The director says that Paramount has the rights and we're not sure how far along they are into development but it is happening.

Plot Concept: A group of youngsters band together, with the help of the Frankenstein Monster, to stop Dracula, the Wolf Man, the Mummy and the Gill Man in their question to gain a powerful amulet.

Monster Squad is right up there with Goonies for me as most enjoyable movies of all time. I grew up on movies like these and they have great rewatchability. As far as a remake, who knows if they can get it right, but at least people are giving the attention this movie deserves. Wolfman rocks. "Time is almost up.....its your last chance for pie".

I agree. I grew up watching this movie and was very pleased to finally get it on DVD awhile back.

As for the remake, I honestly do not have any problems with it...as of now. But I think it would be pretty cool to see how they adapt this.

"Wolfman has nards!!!"

Have no problem with the remake, hopefully it'll be better than VanHelsing, because that's what I'm reminded of with this.

Wiseguy, have you ever seen "The Monster Squad"? "The Monster Squad" is a cult classic, it's a fun movie to watch as a kid, but it's constantly overshadowed by "The Goonies". Even if it isn't as good as "Van Helsing" (which would be sad), your still comparing apples and oranges. "The Monster Squad" is an adventure/comedy, while "Van Helsing" was an action movie with awful CGI and tried too hard to be an epic movie. I understand "Van Helsing" incoporated all the famous monsters, but that is just bc the screenwriter sucked and took "Van Helsing" in such a horrible direction. Why the hell would Van Helsing fight Mr. Hyde? It doesn't even make sense, they tried to make Van Helsing a superhero and that was completely stupid.

The Monster Squad is far better than Van Helsing... VH is simply one of the worst films I have ever seen. It took a satb at uniting all the famous ghouls, but it sucked so bad.

TMS still holds up today and the DVD features are pretty good.

It's strange to remake a reliable flick so soon. It would be like remaking Big Trouble in Little China.

As much as I want a remake you can't… Stan has passed away and there is no Shane Black to write it (sorry but I believe that Black has become a better writer… see Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang… so he could re-write it to make the film less plot holed).

Sorry but NO.

Oh man, I used to love this flick back in the day.
Wise wat up? Yo, come on now man, u can't be talking about Van Helsing, that's different than Monster Squad. Like these cats said, it's more Goonies like if anything :)

How soon is good enough to make a remake? I think 22-23 years is good enough time to remake this film, it's not like it's an american classic. This could mos def work well, film could use a modern approach, new effects, etc. Too bad Stan Winston is dead, I think he worked on Monster Squad, not sure if he was the main guy working on it though.
Got the perfect guy to direct it and it's not Rob Cohen. Ready for it? Alfonso Cuaron son!

By the way, whatever happened to Shane Black? He wrote the original Monster Squad, all the Lethal Weapon flicks, Last Boy Scout, couple of other action flicks then disappeared only to reappear with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Where is he at, and will he get a stab at updating his original work?

I'd love a Big Trouble in Little China remake now that it's been brought up. Didn't that flick lead to Mortal Kombat characters like Raiden? Good stuff.

What about Cyborg, now that,s some crazy shit that could use a remake. You guys remember that futuristic action movie by the great Jean Claude Van Damme!? Van Damme had boot with a knife on it, he would get the knife out and tae kwan doe some mofos. He was trying to get a cyborg to some scientist so they could develop a cure. Someone get Alex Proyas to direct that pronto.

my damn DK tix are burning a hole in my wallet. It is like the sun itself is seated in my pants. I usually go in with low expectations, but my DK hopes are high. The letdown potential could be fatal.

Leave the solid 80s flicks alone. They are even experiencing new audiences. I showed TMS to the wife and friends, an they loved it. So re-watchable. Save some coin and re-release it in the cinema with all kinds of crazy vampy shit.

Now, if you want to remake some fun and memorable 80s bullspit, try these:

Solar Babies
Space Camp (still damn good)
Toxic Crusader
Moontrap (Bruce C and Chekov)
Ice Pirates
Krull
Troll
