Cohen Updates MUMMY 3

Director Rob Cohen has provided readers with another update for his upcoming sequel, THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE EMPEROR DRAGON. In the update, he lets us know he's near the halfway point of filming, describes the final battle sequence (without spoilers) and refers to the amount of visual effects needed for this third installment in the Mummy franchise. He also provides a few videos from the set over at his blog.

Tomorrow begins the big ten-day count-down to finishing the first half of the shoot, our sojourn here in Montreal. We then move to the desert north of Beijing to shoot the epic ending battle where the Terracotta Army takes the field once more. There are over 700 visual effects shots in the film and a good percentage of them will take place in the last twenty minutes of the movie.

I am still on schedule which is as much a miracle to me as to the studio brass. There have been many days of elation and many moments of pain but, overall, it has been a shoot of smooth flow and meticulous detail. I've been editing behind myself because in a large VFX movie like this, I have to turn over sequences to Digital Domain and Rhythm & Hues, our two VFX houses, before the whole film is cut, or shot for that matter, just to make the delivery date in early July.

THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE EMPEROR DRAGON hits theaters everywhere August 1, 2008.

I might be alone on this but I am excited for this. I love the Mummy movies, and I love Cohen movies. Dragon, Dragonheart, Daylight, The Rat Pack, The Skulls, Stealth, XXX, Fast and the Furious. All really fun action movies without a lot of plot. Stephen Sommers will be missed, but I thinnk Cohen is a good replacement. Can't wait to see a trailer.

I didn't like Stealth so much but I enjoyed all the others on that list. I am looking forward to this. The first two and the spin off were entertaining and genuinely fun movies to watch, so I am going to see this one in the theaters also.

I'm looking forward to this too. They are fun movies.

And I'm glad Sommers isn't on it. After what he did to Van Helsing... What a cool concept, wasted. I'd like to see a VH 2 without Sommers.

I'm not a big Cohen fan -- I hated Dragonheart. But the Mummy movies have been mindless popcorn fun and I like what I'm hearing about this one.

And I kind of agree about Sommers. Van Helsing should've been the coolest, most ridiculous movie of the summer and it completely blew. Still, his work on the Mummy movies amused me.

I may end up being too distracted by Maria Bello playing Rachel Weiz to enjoy it much.
