Columbia options "The Green Hornet"

Columbia Pictures has optioned the rights to the classic crime fighting hero, The Green Hornet, and intends to produce a feature film based on the property.

The studio acquired the rights from Green Hornet Inc through Neal H. Moritz, who will produce the film.

"I couldn't be more thrilled to be developing this world renowned property with the people who brought Spider-Man to the screen," said Moritz.   "I can't imagine a studio better equipped or more prepared to handle this kind of material than Sony. With the radio show, television program, comic books, and novels, there is ample source material to bring this classic crime-fighter to life."

Ori Marmur will oversee development of the project on behalf of Moritz's production company.

KJ's Take:  Never been a fan of the Green Hornet as he is pretty much just a boring version of Batman with a stupid name and guns.

can be good, look, it s depend of the budget, if the do it cheap like the phantom, it will be crap. If they put some real money like spidey or superman, it will be huge....Who will do Bruce lee ??

exfan, in the figurative sense, I could see either Jet Li or Jason Scott Lee doing Bruce Lee...in the literal sense, only a gay necropheliac with an Asian fetish would DO Bruce Lee.

Will they set this in modern times or could they set it in the 50s?

(Course' I wasn't interested in the Rocketeer or the Phantom, so why get excited about this one?)

Was not Kevin Smith attached at some point?

K.J. The Green Hornet predates Batman by several years. Batman was a bit of a Green Hornet rip-off. Anyway I hope they do a good job. If they did a period piece they could even through in a cameo of his great uncle: the Lone Ranger.

I guess they are running out of A-list superheroes.

Kevin Smith was offered the film, but declined, citing the scope was beyond his capability. Or am I thinking Green Arrow?

I Imagine this would be a low-budget film. There is simply no "built-in" audience for this, at least outside of Japan.

I am not to familar with this, but i think Jey Li was attached to play Kato at one point, if I am thinking of the right movie. But honestly, this seems to me to reek of The Phantom, The Shadow, STEEL, etc.....But then again, who knows, anything is possible.

Guys, history is repeating itself... When Batman made comic movies hot years ago we were treated to such awesome B or C list comic movies as Dick Tracy, the Shadow, the Phantom etc.... they all licked colorful baboon arse. Now, production values have a lot to do with it, but in most cases only die hard fans of that particular rag cared about the project. The key when making a B or C list character on the big screen is to make it good enough that people who don't give a rats ass about the hornet will want to see it.... good luck, but I'm not sure if todays audience is down with guys running around in childrens birthday party maskes and green trenchcoats who own asian man slaves. Hey I could be wrong...

I can't remember one interesting aspect of Green Hornet to make me care about a film about him... I remember watching the show for Bruce Lee and they watered him down so much that he was even boring.

Unless I see a really kick ass trailer that changes my mind, I have no desire to even bother with this comic adaptation. It seems to me that DC is desperate to do anything to try and have the same success as Marvel, it just seems to me though that there is just a way bigger world in Marvel than DC. I mean the only two big names from DC are Batman and Superman, Green Lantern at third (which I don't understand hasn't been takin more seriously, seems like a potential cash cow. I would much rather see a Green Lantern story) as a oppose to Marvel's Spider man, Hulk, X men, Daredevil, Fanastic Four, and Punisher.
