HARRY POTTER helmer and producer Chris Columbus is taking a dive over at Universal Pictures. Columbus has agreed to direct and produce the studio's live-action feature version of SUB-MARINER, based on the Marvel Comics character also known as Prince Namor. Marvel Studios CEO Avi Arad and former Universal executive Kevin Misher are producing the movie alongside Columbus and his 1492 Productions shingle. The screenplay for the film is by David Self (ROAD TO PERDITION) and Universal has plans to make SUB-MARINER a tentpole action film.
For those not in the know, the Sub-Mariner has been around for decades in the Marvel Universe, making appearances in FANTASTIC FOUR, THE AVENGERS and subsequently his own series. He's the king of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis and is prone to having a hot head when it comes to the safety of his people, having battled against and alongside humans when necessary. In addition to being able to survive underwater, Namor has superhuman strength and the mutant ability to fly through the air. It's presently unknown how many of the character's traits and background experiences have gone into Self's script.
