I am always game when someone wants to take the idea and culture of Halloween, and create a world around it. The Halloween Legion presents a world of eternal All-Hallow’s Eve, reminiscent of Benjamin Roman and Keith Giffen’s “I Luv Halloween”, and celebrates it with the same attention to detail as Michael Dougherty’s film “Trick ‘r Treat”, and Double Fine’s excellent game “Costume Quest”. That may seem like a disparate group of comparisons, but you have to cherish the attempt, regardless of medium, when someone goes full-on ‘Ween.
Halloween Legion features a group of October-tinged heroes protecting the sleepy rural town of Woodland. This spooky spandex crowd counts the Skeleton, The Witch, The Ghost, The Devil, and Autumn the Black Cat among its ranks. They fight off zombies, mummies, and even death itself. The real trouble begins when Woodland experiences a solar eclipse, and saucers from outer space drop out of the sky. How will the down-to-earth Legion battle advanced technology?
This book’s strength comes from its intriguing mysteries and well-executed ideas.  We jump right into the action, and have to get to know our characters along the way, which keeps much of who they are and what they can do in the dark. When Gimalkin, the Witch, falls during the invasion, she reverts to a young, powerless beauty. Freddie, the Ghost, can grow in size, hide people under his sheet, visit the space between life and death, and can even posses foes to fight for the Legion. The Skeleton, clearly the brawn of the group, is a cipher who cheats death, and spouts dark portents, such as “But the night is still coming…”And Molly Aldrich, the Devil, faces the worst foe of all- High School.
