What They Say
Now that the Sangmoon Girl's High School has merged with Seomoon, the boy's high school, Patrick and Alice have found themselves in the same class, and with new romantic interests. Plus, Alice's prize teacher has transferred to Taiwan, leaving her inconsolable. With all these complications, will Alice be able to continue to work as Patrick's assistant, or will her rewards and good fortune end there?
The Review!
I wish I could say that I am starting to enjoy this series and that it is starting to improve, but unfortunately, that’s not the case. Reading Comic is a chore, and the uneven pacing is painful. The artwork is also very hit or miss, with some impressive full page illustrations popping up every now and again to overshadow the otherwise dull and oddly proportioned drawings. The story is so clichéd that it is failing to hold my attention, and the only thing that kept me plowing through it was the realization that there isn’t that much dialog. Thankfully.
Instead of creating a playful sense of conflict between Patrick and Alice, their continual misunderstandings push the envelope of believability. When Alice is late too work, she thinks that Patrick is yelling at her because of her tardiness. He’s really mad at her because he thinks that she has told Daria about his comic book. This could have been a more interesting encounter if they didn’t argue so much. Every time they get together, they fight like cats and dogs, and it is getting boring. Alice always runs away, nothing ever gets resolved, and it makes me wonder what they could possibly see in each other when all they do is yell and scream at each other.
Daria’s interference into their relationship isn’t helping much, but at least she is starting to make for a fun villainess. Since she is so used to getting her way, she is just not accepting Patrick’s rejections and she is actively out to make his life miserable if he doesn’t start going out with her. It is a sad day when I like the psycho girlfriend better than the heroine.
In Summary:
The only recommendation I can make about Comic is to avoid it. It is dull, like social studies home work. It is annoying, like nails on a chalkboard. And unlike fine wine, it isn’t improving with age. Most disappointing of all is that for a high school romance, there isn’t any romance. There is just bickering and more bickering. Sigh.
