ADV's big report never manifested, the ADV staff seemed to be in a meeting
that spanned several days.
And Tokyopop posted their report to this board, so you know what happened.
And thanks to Comic-con.com having omitted their panel from the website's
schedule, I missed Viz's manga panel. But when pressed about it later, there
really wasn't anything major that hadn't been brought up at AX.
Some minor reports:
Manga only has the rights to the Rayearth OVA, not the 'Wings of Hope'
collection. EVA movies on VHS possibly in December. DVD in January. Ghost
Sweeper Mikami will hopefully be released by late 2001. Virus Buster Surge is
definitely for next year. And I didn't even bother discussing RSF. I already
knew the response.
CPM Manga to release more Slayers manga in October. The Slayers Super
Explosive something-or-other. Also Deedlit's story, which is said to look
good. Nadesico manga is to end soon.
Kia Asamiya IS moving to New York, because he likes America more than he likes
Japan. Plus, he can get Diet Doctor Pepper here. You can't in Japan. His
Batman manga will be released at a time when it won't interfere with the
release of Frank Miller's Dark Knight Strikes Again. DC doesn't want two big
Batman projects overlapping. The delays in his color version of Dark Angel
should stop now, as the entire series was held back due to coloring problems
on one issue.
Pioneer plans to release The Wanderers starting around Winter, on a total of
four DVDs. And they will release more DVD boxsets if the ones released sell
well. They feel bad about Moldiver. Mihoshi special is still being thought
about. The cost of dubbing Magical Project S equals the purchase price for
several series, which means that they might not do it. Though I hope it will.
Regarding the so-called Director's Cut of Soul Taker, it really is just having
some scenes redrawn to look nicer, no content changes at all. It is unknown if
the original footage will be available. I personally doubt it, as if the
director wants people to see the show a certain way so much that he is
reanimating the series, I really doubt he'll let them see the inferior
footage.
Pioneer's release of Ah! Megami-Sama might be by the name Ah! My Goddess in
America. Though we semi-joked about using alternate covers to please both the
Oh! and the Ah! groups. (Reminds me of green and purple wars on B5) They will
absolutely not use the Coastal Carolina voices, as they "need to distance
ourselves" from the Animeigo release. The El Hazard Box Set looks pretty. The
Mini-goddess series will be released on several DVD-5s. For now, at least.
Akira will be airing on Showtime and Pay-Per-View.
Viz hasn't chosen a replacement for X, which they hope to regain the ability
to publish again. They CAN'T release unedited Video Girl AI, as the publishers
have disavowed the existance of the untouched manga. The few countries that
have released it uncut are flukes basically. And that's about it.
Bandai has to release dub-only Gundam TV DVDs, since they've all but abandoned
VHS, because they need to release it when the show airs on TV. There will be
NO release of Escaflowne Best Collection on DVD. Ever. It sold THAT bad. Some
of the classic giant robot anime will have to be released sub-only.
No one from Funimation who knew anything about the DVDs was there for me to
talk to.
Media Blasters was a no show. As was Animeigo. Urban Vision had nothing at
all.
Synch-Point was selling a promo video of JoJo's. I was too cheap to buy it. No
news from them.
From Marvel, besides their Mangaverse event happening in January, where the
Marvel Universe is reimagined as if it were manga, they are also releasing a
Greg Rucka (Whiteout, Detective Comics, Queen and Country) and Yoshitaka Amano
3 part graphic novel with Elektra and Wolverine. My jaw literally dropped when
they announced this.
Nothing from Tokyopop that they didn't cover better in their press release.
Dark Horse will be releasing Astro Boy manga, rereleasing the Oh My Goddess
manga collections to cover the skipped chapters, and will be releasing
Exxaxion. (SP?)
Well, then it seems that there was some news after all.
