It's the week of Comic-Con! Here's the latest installment of COMIC-CON PITCH 2006, in which Comics2Film endeavors to connect indie comics creators with Hollywood producers.
Today we've got Dan Mishkin talking about his upcoming young readers' book THE FOREST KING!
Q: Describe THE FOREST KING in two sentences or less.
Dan Mishkin (DM):THE FOREST KING tells the story of Justin Woodlark, who moves to a small New England town in the aftermath of a family tragedy, only to discover that an ancient evil is on the rise there. In our first volume, Woodlark's Shadow, Justin realizes that to face the terrible power that's lurking in the woods he must do more than conquer his fears; he must risk making himself an outcast among the other young people in the town.
Q: If you were to compare GRUNTS to a movie or TV show what would it be?
DM: There are echoes of HARRY POTTER in THE FOREST KING. Although Justin seems to have no special powers, he does face a supernatural threat that the adult world seems unwilling or unable to recognize, and he must rely on his own wits and courage, along with the one or two friends he can convince of the danger, to defeat it. For similar reasons, it is reminiscent of E.T.
Q: Why do you think FOREST KING would translate to film/TV/animation?
DM: The setting, a small New England town nestled in a spooky forest, provides a visual canvas that's a natural for the screen - even more so when the suspense builds as we get fleeting glimpses of the shadowy creature in the woods. Additionally, the look of the creature when revealed is startling and unique; the various characters ring with emotional truth; and the events of the story - from the mysterious game that the children play in the forest, to an evening's bonfire, to a deadly pursuit downriver by canoe, to the final confrontation with an overwhelming force of evil - play out with vivid and dramatic immediacy.
Q: Why should movie folks seek you out at Comic-Con?
DM: Not only will Komikwerks be displaying many other projects to look at, but movie people can also talk to me about my various published creations like CREEPS, BLUE DEVIL, and AMETHYST, PRINCESS OF GEMWORLD, as well as my many new concepts in areas supernatural, science fictional, horrific and fun.
Q: How can folks find you at Comic-Con (please provide booth number and additonal contact info)?
DM: I'll be at the Komikwerks/Actionopolis booth 2302 and can be reached by email at email@example.com
