We've arrived at the week of Comic-ConInternational 2004 in San Diego! Hollywood will be coming to the show, andComics2Film aims to help Hollywood find the good stuff.
Today we've got Steven Goldman, creator of "Styx Taxi".
Q: Describe "StyxTaxi" and its lead characters in two sentences or less.
Goldman: "StyxTaxi" is a cab service for the just-dead, run by the mysterious Dispatch, employing spirits (who possess the bodies of living cabbies and use their cabs)to offer souls a last chance to make peace with their life before movingon...everyone gets one stop, two hours, and a small set of rules to follow. Thetwo drivers we've spent the most time with are Charon, a former Irishthug-for-hire from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and Dom, a former NYC slumlord.
Q: If you were to compare"Styx Taxi" to a movie, TV show (or movies or TV shows) what would itbe?
Goldman: If "Nighton Earth" by Jim Jarmusch met Showtime's "Dead Like Me" butfocused in on the rides as much as they do the drivers, you might have a TVversion of Styx Taxi. The issues tackled in the series share common ground with"Six Feet Under," but spend a lot more time on the other side of theveil.
Q: Why do you think"Styx Taxi" would translate to film/TV/animation?
Goldman: Because there'sbeen a very high demand on cable TV for quality, well-written series. Given howwell HBO and Showtime's slates of original programming have been doing, and"Styx Taxi" provides a very rich framework in which one could tell ahuge variety of stories. There's also a lot to build up around Dispatch, who sheis and what she wants out of all this.
"Styx Taxi" wouldalso make an amazing animated film, a la Richard Linklater's "WakingLife."
Q: Why should movie folkscome by your Comic-Con booth?
Goldman: Because they'dlike to read comics with fire, heart and serious talent. Two of the fourfantastic artists who have worked on "Styx Taxi" will be on-hand(along with me, the writer/creator) to talk about the book. Movie folks can alsoscope out a preview of another soon-to-be-hot property, our political graphicnovel, EVERYMAN, which is about a voting machine scandal and a coup to come...inJanuary 2005.
