Comic-Con Preview: 'Batman: Madness'

By Eli McElmurray     May 28, 2004

In recent years, Comic-ConInternational: San Diego has become a show-place  for independent movieprojects and fan films. Once dominated by "Star Wars" and "StarTrek," indie films tackling comic book superheroes have become a new stapleof the fan film community, demonstrating that a respectful adaptation of thesource material  can result in dynamic and exciting movie fare.

Heroes like Batman, Superman,Wonder Woman, Spider-Man and Hulk do not necessarily need big-name actors tomake people want to see the movie. Fans can get as excited about worthy effortslike "Batman: Dead End" and "Batman Beyond: Year One" as thewould for big-screen, big-budget takes on these characters.

Bat In The Sun Production'sAaron Schoenke demonstrated this in his first fan film "Batman Beyond: YearOne." Where Warner Bros failed to convert the future-bat cartoon into alive-action feature, Aaron wrote and filmed his own version, which quicklybecame a fan favorite.

Aaron followed thatfull-length effort with the short film "Batman: Dark Justice." Thistime the filmmaker went to the past and showed up a younger Batman.

For those who have doubtsabout this up and coming director, be forewarned: He's gearing up to make a bigsplash at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego with his third bat-film:"Batman: Madness."

"Batman: Madness"looks to up the ante on all of the previous fan films. It features not just theDark Knight Detective, not just the Dynamic Duo, but also the World's Finest. That's right! In "Madness" you will see Batman, Nightwing and Supermango up against the deadly duo of Poison Ivy and the Mad Hatter.

Judging from the exclusivephotos provided to Comics2Film, Bat In The Sun is once again pushing theenvelope on independent movies and putting Hollywood to shame.

"Batman: Madness"will be first seen at the San Diego Comic Con this summer but will makeappearances at other cons, like the Metropolis Superman Convention later in theyear.

Schoenke gave up some detailsabout the new movie "Batman: Madness":

Eli McElmurray (EM):Who are the actors?

Aaron Schoenke (AS):Dark Justice was completed and alot of referrals came to me from all directions. The actors are all from the L.A. Hollywood area and are pursuing careers inacting.

EM: Where was thisfilmed?

AS: The film is allshot on location here in the Los Angeles area. One scene that was challengingwas filmed at a swamp that leads into a sewer. We started filming each nightaround 10pm and shot till daybreak. It was cold and wet, but the actors were alltroopers with positive input. I cannot thank them enough.

EM: Is there a chancefor a sequel?

AS: Right now nothingis planned, I have to wait and see, and explore new opportunities. I have beenoffered a few pilots for new shows and along with some comic book writing gigs.So we'll have to wait and see what time will reveal.

EM: Do you think yougot across what you wanted in the movie?

AS: I am currentlystill editing and I am happy with the way it's wrapping up. There is always afew things I wish I could redo or re-shoot but that's expected. It's all abouttime and budget without compromising your vision. With each film I want toexpand upon my experience and creatively find new ways to show things.

"Batman: Madness"is just one of many independent movies that are scheduled to wow the fans atthis summers Comic-Con International: SanDiego. Stayed tuned for more special interviews on indie films showing atSDCC 2004.
