ARCHIE! DAREDEVIL! BLACKEST NIGHT! Lots More!

By Ben Johnson     August 19, 2009
Source: Mania

SPINNER RACK: Archie #600
© Mania

It’s Wednesday again, and as everyone who’s anyone (and quite a few that aren’t) know that means NEW COMICS!!! And I’m here every week to tell you what to buy. Awesome!!!

But wait… what if you’re stuck on a deserted island and your iPhone can only open the facebook app? How would you find your way to everything Mania.com? Could you live without Comicscape, Spinner Rack, No Fly Zone, or reviews? No, of course not!

Have no fear, your answer is here! Become friends and fans on facebook and get regular updates: The Mania.com page on facebook and (more importantly) the Ben Johnson page on Facebook.

Ben’s Ten

Last week I could have had twenty books on this list, this week I had to work to find ten I wanted to read, let alone suggest to others.

10) Zombie Holocaust SC
I haven’t read this, I haven’t heard of this, but I’m buying it on the name alone.

9) Batgirl #1
It’s Batgirl and she’s back.

8) Superman Annual #14, $3.99
It stars Mon-El as he discovers his roots, but it gets on the list for being an oversized issue for $3.99.

7) Astounding Wolf-Man #18
One of those big set up issues Kirkman likes so much. Check it out or have nothing to talk about at work for the next several months.

6) Punisher #8
Still can not believe I am reading and enjoying a 616 Punisher book. Read it, love it.

5) Blackest Night Superman #1
JSA Superman back from the dead? Hell yes!

4) Mighty Avengers #28
Unlike another columnist here on Mania.com (cough, Chad) I dig the hell out of Bendis’ writing on this team book.

3) Stand American Nightmares #5
The final issue of volume 2. I’m not sure how interested I’d be in this comic if I hadn’t read the book, but knowing what’s coming has me begging for more.

2) Daredevil #500
I had some trepidation putting this on the list. Ed Brubaker is awesome, but the last two milestones he wrote (Captain America 50 and 600, back-to-back no less) were not worth the hype.

1) Archie #600
Dude, Archie is getting married to Veronica, how could I not make that #1 (and how could he not choose Betty? I mean sure, Veronica is definitely better in bed, but when you’re talking marriage material it’s Betty all the way. I hope Archie likes being the catcher).

Don't worry about Archie getting married to Veronica. Sooner or later Mephisto will offer them a deal...

agentkooper 8/19/2009 9:15:14 AM

 Hahaha, awesome!

lister 8/19/2009 9:38:49 AM

Hey! I found the article easily this week!

I am so totally with Ben on the Punisher. I am surprised how much I like him for the first time.

Also totally with Ben on the Red Hood. Although he's interesting in the Punisher book, in some books he's a badass, in others he's Dormammu's servant, and in his mini-series he's like this schlub. At this point, he's wearisome.

I think Archie, Veronica and Betty should just move to Utah. Problem solved.

OK, here's what I wanna read (nothing from DC this week for me, I'll skim Supergirl at the rack... that sounds dirty):

Mighty Avengers -- This is the best Avengers book right now.

Daredevil -- I've read some early stuff on this that makes me want to check it out.

The Punisher -- Guest starring one of my favorite Avengers line-ups! Yeah, for real.

X-Men Legacy -- This book was pretty bad for a while, but it's part of Utopia this time, and I am liking that.

X-Factor -- The best X-book right now, bar none.

hanso 8/19/2009 10:06:37 AM

They need to remake the Archie movie.

Anywho, I need a list of all the Blackest Night titles currently out right now or at least a list of the most important ones.

Thanks.

gauleyboy420 8/19/2009 11:00:21 AM

Isn't Norm Breyfogle drawing Archie right now? Or was that a one shot deal?

Blackest night ...STILL GREAT. Love the buzzing like flies Black ower rings.

BUT STILL CHAMPION AND BEST COMIC OUT THERE!!!!....IS.....

The Walking Dead.

Just Read Vol. 10 "What We've Become"

SO FUCKING GOOD!!!!!!

Haven't turned pages that fast in a long time! (the intense attack scene on Rick's son)

If you are not reading this book and you like comics, READ IT!

agentkooper 8/19/2009 11:27:00 AM

 Hanso,

Checklist here:

http://www.popcultureshock.com/blackest-night-checklist/48962/

Blackest Night, Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps are required reading, fill in the others as you see fit.

Muenster 8/19/2009 10:43:39 PM

Wow! Archie's getting married. Always thought he'd end up with Betty too. Well, rich girls need lovin' too.

hanso 8/20/2009 4:37:52 AM

Thanks Agent Cooper, checklist was great.   I got everything for July and some of the August stuff.  I couldn't find Green Lantern 45 or Blackest Night Superman yet.  I know the Superman issue is out, do you know if GL 45 has already released or will it be released next week?

kwsupes 8/20/2009 7:25:23 AM

GL is next week Hanso and it looks to be a pretty good one as I think it is going to deal with the Sinestro Corps and Star Sapphires. The Blackest night Batman issue last week was great as well as the main story, can't wait for more. There is also a Titans Blackest Night miniseries dropping next week. I may skip that one. After these three miniseries run their course Supes/ Batman/ and Titans from what I saw the other day November is the month of crossovers as Blackest Night will be featured in a large portion of the main books. The most notable ones that I have seen are the Justice League and Booster Gold because it will feature the return of Ted Kord ought to be pretty cool. Although what AgentKooper said about GL, Green Lantern Corps, and Blackest Night are the only three that you really need I would reccomend the Batman miniseries because it provides some more clues about the nature of the Black Lanterns and Tomasi does a great job handling the writing and it almost fits seemlessly into what is going on right now in all the other Bat titles.

lister 8/20/2009 9:41:08 AM

Ugh. As far as I am concerned, Ted Kord was brought back to life in the Booster Gold book. OK, then he went and sacrificed him but then probably didn't. They didn't excplicity show it, but it was him. I think making him a Black Lantern is gratuitous. There's too many Black Lanterns already. I mean SPOILER ALERT...   Mr. and Mrs. Grayson? Please. Why would the "rings" want to bother with something so specific? The Blackest Night Batman book was pretty good because of Boston Brand and the dialog between Dick and Damien, but I need some reasoning as to why the rings need to raise regular humans from the dead.
