Piecing it together

By Robert T. Trate     April 21, 2012

Greetings Maniacs, it's your News Editor, Robert Trate here. As the new News Editor for I have spent the last three weeks adapting to my new  position. It is a tad daunting at times checking out the different outlets and figuring out what's the most important news of the day. It's starts to wear on you but sometimes you do see patterns or hints of what’s to come.

This week I may have just pieced together my own bit of news. Pure speculation, but I think I may just be right. At The Avengers premiere in Hollywood, Robert Downey Jr. stated that after the press conference he had one more scene to shoot. Now this was immediately dismissed by director Joss Whedon and Marvel über producer Kevin Feige. However, Mark Ruffalo and Chris Hemsworth said he did indeed have something yet to shoot.

What could this be?

My speculation is that it is for scene after the credits. A staple of the Marvel movies has been that one post-credit scene to tie these these characters, or the whole universe together. This week we saw another hint and it had to do with a TV Spot for ABC's Castle. It featured none other than Robert Downey Jr. and Nathan Fillion. It might seem odd but cross promoting a Disney movie (The Avengers) on a Disney owned Channel (ABC) with a Disney owned show (Castle) makes me go, “wait a second.”

Now it might seem like a long shot but with all the speculation about the next Marvel character to get the movie treatment, could this mean that property has Nathan Fillion in it? Was this little Castle/ Downey Jr. TV Spot a runoff after they filmed a certain scene?

My speculation is that Fillion is not only going to be introduced as the next hero in the Marvel Movie Universe, but he will be cast as Ant-Man. The Ant-Man movie has been the works for a while. So much so that Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) has been attached. I know what you're thinking and it's two things. The first is that Edgar Wright would probably cast long time collaborator Simon Pegg as Ant-Man/ Henry Pym. The second thing is, Fillion has never carried a tent pole franchise/ film that didn't have a cult TV show attached to it. It is just a mere coincidence that that very same property has The Avengers director attached to it... hmmm.

As I said before, this is all just speculation. However, if The Avengers becomes the hot property, the Ant-Man scene kills, and Edgar Wright and Nathan Fillion show up at Comic Con together... well, you heard it here first.

The Fillion/AntMan speculation is about 4 years old. Not mine but that's been the buzz from many Fillion fans for years now

First. let me say that I LOVE Fillion...however, I cannot bring myself to watch "Castle". It just seems like more formulaic network cop crap. Fillion is getting too old and doughy to play a Marvel superhero.  I think Downey's "easter egg" scene is probably more a setup for Iron Man 3. Who should play Ant Man?? Henry Pym should be young-ish, and brilliant...with a dark side. How about Brendan Fehr from "Bones" and "Roswell"?? OK, I'm braced; let me have it....

I'd go see Fillion in just about anything, even an AntMan movie.   He's just adorable and had proved with Castle that he can do mainstream and not just genre projects.  But his past with Firefly and Buffy couldn't hurt him being cast as a character like AntMan.

And he can sing.  Did you see him in Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog?  He wa great!

Can't stand AntMan

From the interviews I've read with Edgar Wright, a few details regarding the Ant-Man movie have come to light.  For starters, Hank Pym won't be Ant-Man, but he will appear in the movie.  The character of Scott Lang will be taking over the persona of Ant-Man from Pym.  Given that it's being done by Edgar Wright, it's obviously an action comedy.

Personally, I neither know nor care about the character of Ant-Man.  I have enjoyed all of Edgar Wright's films so far however, and I've also liked everything Marvel Studios has done.  Nathan Fillion would likely be a good fit in the role from what little I do know about it, but these sorts of casting speculation rarely pan out.  The "if it sounds too good to be true" rule usually seems to apply.

I wouldn't read much into Robert Downey Jr. being promoting Avengers on castle. Considering that Adam Baldwin was a guest star on the episode in question, and that a lot of women watch Castle for Fillion, it was a given that this episode was going to have the most Whedon fans watching (that particular night) who don't have a Y chromosome and were more than likely not going to see Avengers on their own. Simple marketing to an audience that otherwise wouldn't see the movie without their bfs/husbands dragging them to see it.

Fillion was rumored to be the lead in Ant-Man long ago, but about a year ago another name surfaced...Alan Tudyk. Yup, another Whedon alumni. Considering that Tudyk just does the occasional cameo on the show Suburgatory, AND has been in a lot more successful films than Fillion, he would probably be the smart and logical choice for the role. Pegg should be left to star in The Boys (since the role in the comic was created specifically for him), and it would be good for Wright to branch out a little and not rely on the same actors all the time as a crutch. Because it does get stale fairly quick.

As mentionned earlier, at Marvel's online presentation of the premiere of the Avengers, the girls interviewing the starts had already hinted (after seeing the movie the night before) that people shoud stay after the credits therefore killing the ''reshoot'' theory for the after credit scenes since they already filmed them.

As far as Ant-Man...meh...don't really care about the character so, whoever does it doesn't really mean much for me.

Love Pym (ant man/yellow jacket/goliath) ...

Fillion is cool.  I'm not excited about Ant-Man though.  He wasn't a staple of my comic reading youth.  I think Marvel should be going with Doctor Strange or SHIELD for the next round of stand alone flicks.  Maybe if Hawkeye is cool in Avengers a stand alone for him would work.  I would really like to see Daredevil redone too.  Any chance marvel could get the rights back to that the way they did with the Hulk?

The license for Daredevil with Fox gives them ten years to make another movie.  Why the interval is so long compared to the other licenses is a mystery.  Even so, time is running out.  The first one came out in 2003.  I'm not sure if the cameo in 2005's Elektra counts or not.  It would be great if the license were allowed to lapse, but it seems unlikely.  Sony rushed X-Men: First Class and Ghost Rider 2 into production to protect their licenses, so Fox will probably do the same.  So far, only Lionsgate and Universal have allowed any of their Marvel licenses to expire.  Lionsgate had Black Widow and Punisher, while Hulk was at Universal.
